Gorgeous Zinfandel for $8

In these devastating economic times, you’ll find me writing more and more about value wines and suggesting what I consider to be special bottles, those that taste twice or even three times as expensive. Shenandoah Vineyards’ 2006 Amador County ZInfandel Special Reserve is such a wine.

In the glass, it’s a light-bodied golden garnet. On the palate, you’ll taste the cocoa and cherries you’ve come to expect from this grape, but not in the jam form you may be tired of. This wine channels Primitivo, Zin’s Italian twin, with its moderate tannins and low burn (13.9% alcohol). Added bonus: this wine is made from 100% estate fruit, which is organically-grown.

My buddy found the wine in a Calaveras County shop for $8 but the new vintage is out and available on the winery’s web site for $11.

Wow, very cool. Thanks Jason. I’m going to forward your picks to some of my friends. You going to the bloggers conference in a few weeks? Looks like we’re doing Turkey instead of Argentina, btw!

Would love to make it, but doesn’t look like my “real job” is going to allow it. Turkey nice! Had a friend visit some wineries there. I’ll check in to see if he has any recommendations.

    That would be great, thanks.

WHAT? You recommending a Zin? I’m shocked! ;-p Hey, I’ll be at the bloggers’ conference this weekend — saw your name on the list and was meaning to drop you a line.

Excellent, let’s hang! Should we carpool? Are you staying in Santa Rosa? I’m driving back to the East Bay on Friday night and then going back on Saturday for the break out sessions. Lemme know dude!
