The Oakland Raiders have signed rookie safety Tyvon Branch to a contract. The Raiders fourth round selection in the 2008 NFL Draft signed the contract in the Hall of Fame room at the team’s Alameda, Calif., facility.
“It’s a big sigh of relief. It’s a very exciting feeling but I know it is only one small step,” Branch said. “It’s a dream come true. It seems like just yesterday I was a kid playing flag football, dreaming about playing in the NFL. Now I am here and it is just a dream come true.”
The 6′0″, 205-pound safety was the 100th overall selection (#1 in the 4th round) and the Raiders second pick in the 2008 Draft. The Raiders executed a trade with the Dallas Cowboys to move up to the 100th spot from 104.
The Cicero, N.Y., native played in 48 games with 31 starts both in the secondary and as a kick returner for the University of Connecticut. In four years with UConn, he recorded 230 tackles (133 solo) with 7.5 tackles for loss, including half a sack. Branch intercepted three passes and broke up 18 more and returned 37 kickoffs for 980 yards (26.5 avg.) with two scores. He helped UConn to it’s first ever 2007 BIG EAST Championship and is one of six Huskies to play in both of the school’s bowl appearances.
