30 Questions to Kickoff: Replacing Drew

We shift our focus back to the players today.

Ben’s question: Anyone who saw Monte Vista play last year knows that while the Mustangs had plenty of talent, the engine ran smoothest when QB/DB Drew McAllister was at the top of his game. He was Monte Vista’s unquestioned leader for most of his four years at the school and now, with McAllister gone to USC, the question becomes who will step into his leadership role? Will it be new QB Brett Nottingham? How about WR Taylor Brewster? Or could it be Stanford-bound TE Zach Ertz? And, perhaps most importantly, how will Nottingham respond to the complexities of coach Craig Bergman’s fast-paced offense?

Chace’s answer: Nottingham might not have Pete Carroll patrolling the Mustangs sideline this season, but rest assured, this is all part of Bergman’s plan. Nottingham spent his entire sophomore season in 2007 as the primary backup to McAllister. He’s been groomed to run this offense. Keep in mind that he will be the third straight QB to spend three full years on varsity. The last two: Kyle Wright (University of Miami/49ers) and McAllister (USC).

Nottingham should also have no shortages of weapons. Ertz hauled in 38 catches with six touchdowns, in just SIX games last season. Brewster has breakaway speed and averaged 22 yards per catch last season. Finally, a guy that Ben didn’t even mention is Tom Hemmingson. All he did last year was the lead Mustangs in catches (40) and receiving yards (500).

The question facing the Monte Vista offense will be who joins Nottingham in the team’s backfield. Last year’s leading rusher, Richie Storlee, has graduated. McAllister was the team’s second leading rusher. If the Mustangs can find a consistent running threat, they should have no trouble continuing to light up EBAL scoreboards.

And don’t forget Monte Vista’s o-line. Perhaps their biggest strength, every single starter on the offensive line is back this year, including 2nd team all EBAL players Sam Mosle and Nick Dreyer, and 1st team all EBAL Dan Wissinger. This offensive line will be very good.
