Oakland High budget director, longtime teacher, dies

Update: A memorial service at Oakland High is planned for 6 p.m. Monday.

I have some sad news to report. Charles Shin, who taught for years at Oakland High School before becoming the budget director this year, died unexpectedly last night of natural causes. A student told me he died just before his 43rd birthday.

An administrator at the school told me staff were just being informed of the news. I’ll post updates as I learn of memorial services or other information.

If you knew Shin as a colleague or a teacher, if you have a photo of him, or if you would like to be interviewed for his news obituary, please contact me.

R.I.P. Mr. Shin, I’ll never forget your smiles and the energy you’ve brought to us in class……

I’m was a student of Mr. Shin’s, i graduated class of 2004. man its sad to hear that, he was an awesome teacher, there was never a dull moment in his class, and his teaching methods may have been a bit odd to some, but man he taught and i learned. there is no other way to put it but he was an awesome person all around, he was always cheerful and always had jokes to tell, and you rearely saw him angry.
the great thing about mr. shin was that he was actually a teacher that cared and you don’t get very many of those now days.

please keep me updated with his memorial service, i live out in pittsburg now, but i would love to attend.

I knew Mr. Shin in my Sophomore year. He was my Physiology Teacher and he was the one who got me into SFSU. I remember taking a picture with him during my high school Senior Ball and I gave him a copy of that picture and until now he has it with him in his wallet. He chases my sister and her boyfriend around at SFSU who happens to be in his class also to show them the picture and he loved to take them out. He always tell me to become something in life. I miss him dearly. He is such a wonderful person to everyone. R.I.P. Mr. Shin. I listened to you. I can do better and you know what I mean.

*SIGH* I don’t believe Mr.Shin is gone, the whole school doesn’t feel the same without him. Mr.Shin is the best, his jokes are hilarious, every time I reminisce about the times in his class, it always makes me smile. We all miss you, especially me, the little doctor that plays golf.
