Sue, I can’t even imagine what it must have been like for your niece. At least now, with the case almost closed, she might be able to put the incident behind her.

*** Off topic *** Posted here because it’s loosely related to school violence.

Last fall, there was a shooting incident in Oroville’s high school. No one was hurt, but the student with the gun did put some holes in a classroom.

Last Saturday, while visiting my sister in Oroville, we learned that the student has accepted a plea and there will be no trial.

It’s over – what a relief!

My niece will not have to testify. She was one of the hostages.

One of my son’s (1st grade at Peralta) classmates was at Harmony at the time of the shooting. He brought the newspaper to school the next day to talk about it with the other students. The 1st grade teacher was near 51st and Telegraph at the time of the car chase so had some personal experience to share. So the class had a conversation about what happened, choices that people make (e.g. the choice to try to rob the gas station) and also the danger of guns and what to do if you find yourself around guns.

For Sue: Harmony Road mentioned that they were going to put on some type of fund raiser for Chris. Maybe your boys could be part of that.

One thing I think is important for kids to know about this is that the “good guys” got the “bad guy”. I don’t know how old your kids are but my 6 year old understood that part and it helped him feel safe.

In the past both my sons took music lessons at Harmony Road, so I was very shaken and upset when I saw the first news of the shooting. I could never have imagined that would happen there.

My husband and I have been careful to keep this bit of news from our boys, but perhaps we were wrong. Maybe instead we should be encouraging them to support the fundraising efforts. Maybe they could put together a piano and guitar duo of some of the pieces they’ve learned. Hmmm. I wonder if other Harmony Road students would be willing or interested in doing a benefit performance. I think I’m going to ask my sons tonight, and see what they think.
