And the school board candidates are…

Four seats on the Oakland school board — in Districts 1, 3, 5 and 7 — are up for grabs in the June 3 city election, and the deadline for all but one of the seats was last Friday, according to the city clerk’s office.

As of this afternoon, six people had filed their candidate papers.  District 3 (West Oakland) candidates have until Wednesday, the extended deadline, to file.

District 1, North Oakland. Currently held by Kerry Hamill

Candidates: Jody London, an OUSD parent, and Brian Rogers, director of the Rogers Family Foundation and board member of the Small Schools Foundation

District 3, West Oakland. Currently held by Gregory Hodge

Candidates: None, although Hodge’s wife, Jumoke Hinton Hodge, says she’sdefinitely running. She has until Wednesday afternoon, an extended deadline, to file.

District 5, Glenview, Fruitvale. Currently held by Noel Gallo

Candidates: Noel Gallo (incumbent). No challengers.

District 7, Sobrante Park, Elmhurst. Currently held by Alice Spearman

Candidates: Alice Spearman (incumbent); Doris Limbrick, associate pastor of Acts Full Gospel Church and principal of Acts Christian Academy; and Beverly Williams, administrative assistant

Without running anyone’s name through the mud, tell us what you know about these candidates. Who would be the best qualified to oversee the Oakland school district? I’ll fill in details as I talk to them individually.

I just checked the OUSD web-site, and couldn’t find anything showing the boundaries of the various members’ districts. I think my family is in District 4, but I wanted to confirm that. Anyone know where that info can be found?

  • Bruce

I couldn’t find a way to tell which District you are in on a website, but either of the following two offices would be able to tell you based on your address:

    Oakland City Clerk’s Office 510-238-3612
Alameda County Registrar of Voters 510-272-6973

    Thanks, Bruce!

The County Registrar’s office has a bit of hold time, and the guy who answered seemed confused by my question – he figured out my Congressional, state assembly, and state senate districts correctly – but he got someone else on the phone, and she confirmed my earlier guess about the OUSD board.

Also, they asked for my name and date of birth, but not my home address.

If anyone tries the City Clerk, maybe they’ll have less hassle.

In case anybody else cares out there, I ran across this on the City of Oakland website that will tell you what City Council district your home address is in. (School Board district boundaries are the same as the City Council in Oakland.)

Thanks, Bruce. The info is much appreciated.
