Thank you for being a part of the success in Oakland. Your ability to see the goodness, ability and potential in students is what all parents want from the teachers of their children.

To the students in the article I want to give you one piece of wisdom I have learned over the years (read, hard lesson). You will find yourself in college – I see it for each of your futures – you will be given an opportunity to earn a degree, get an education or both. Never mistake a degree for an education. Always strive to learn, push the teachers to educate you, not just give you grades and a piece of paper. It’s the education that will carry you through life.

Second, to the three students featured in the articles (and to all the other kids) my hopes and best wishes to you. Keep dreaming, and keep working for your dreams.
