School tours

By Katy Murphy
Tuesday, November 18th, 2008 at 3:28 pm in elementary schools, enrollment, families, high schools, middle schools, parents, students.

Have you ever wanted to see what an Oakland public school looks like from the inside, but didn’t want the hassle of setting up an appointment?

Now’s your chance to see a school at work.

An organized tour might not offer as candid a snapshot as if you dropped in one morning without the herd of parents, but it’s probably much better than going on hearsay alone.

For elementary school tour dates (*see below list for recent revisions), click here. For middle schools, here. For high schools, here.

(The above photo, by Tribune photographer Laura Oda, was taken during a 2006 tour of Crocker Highlands Elementary School.)

The School Options window, during which families select their top school choices, opens Dec. 10, but families have until Jan. 15 to submit their paperwork.

Unlike previous years, OUSD has decided to limit the Options Fair to prospective elementary school families. It’s from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 4 at the downtown Oakland Marriott, 1001 Broadway. Here is the flier.

Have info about public charter schools or private schools? Feel free to post it.

*UPDATE: Here’s revised elementary school tour information from the district:

Acorn Woodland: Dec. 11 and 17 from 9-10 AM

Ascend: Dec. 11 from 10-11 AM

Learning Without Limits: Dec. 11 from 9-10:30 AM

Manzanita Seed: Dec. 9 from 11AM-12 PM

Piedmont Avenue Elementary will host an open house on Wednesday, December 10, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Prospective families are encouraged to attend, particularly those from the Piedmont Avenue and surrounding neighborhoods. Kids are welcome.

Mrs. Zarina Ahmad, principal of the school, will welcome families and lead a tour of the school. Several teachers, including kindergarten teachers, will be on hand to meet and greet parents and students and answer questions about their classrooms and the school.

Walktoschool/PANSA, a neighborhood organization founded to support Piedmont Avenue Elementary, will provide coffee, tea and simple snacks. PTA members will also be available to answer questions.

If you are unable to attend on December 10, but are interested in finding out more about Piedmont Avenue Elementary, please come to the school office Wednesdays at 9 a.m. for a tour of the school with Mrs. Ahmad.
