The only high school marching band in town

For years I’ve wanted to see what the Oakland Holiday Parade was all about, and on Saturday I rode my bike downtown to take a look. Earlier in the week, I had interviewed the Skyline High School drum majors and the band president, and so of course I needed to see — and hear — the group in person.

The story was in Sunday’s paper, but has only just now been posted online. You can read it here.

What other Oakland schools working to build up their music programs?

    Ms. Katy,

Thanks for the great story about our band at Skyline. They are doing a super job!

The music program at Elmhurst (ECP and Alliance) is award-winning among middle school programs in California.

The public is invited to Skyline’s 2008 Holiday Concert on Wednesday, December 17 at 7:30 p.m. where they will see performances by this marching band as well as the school’s orchestra, award-winning jazz band, and its vocal ensembles (including the advanced choir “Voices of the Sky”). The concert concludes with the audience joining with the performers to sing the “Hallelujah Chorus.” Farnsworth Theater on the Skyline campus. $10 general admission and $5 for children under 12 & seniors over 65.

Bret Harte Middle School has Dwayne Worm, an excellent music teacher with both beginning and advanced band and orchestra, as well as jazz band. Mr. Worm has the support of professional musicians coming in to work with the students. Our concert was last night (wed.).

Redwood Heights Elementary School has music integrated into the school day for some grades (song flutes, Kodaly music, etc.). as well as our band leader Marlo Green who comes 3 mornings a week for grades 3-5 with parent musicians helping out, as well as a weekly before school choir. Our concert is next Thursday Dec. 18th 7pm. Come enjoy!

Westlake Middle School has SEVEN fantastic award winning bands. These classes are taught by Mr. Randy Porter, who graduated from Skyline and has been teaching in the district since 1988. In addition to leading our band classes, he also is a mentor teacher in the district and leads the “Big O” band, made entirely of district music teachers. His hard work has gotten many grants for our music program, which have been spent on instruments and the many professionals who visit the class and provide one on one tutoring.
You can see some of the fantastic work Mr. Porter does at our Winter concert on December 17, or at the Lakeshore Walk on the night of the 18th. Or of course everyone is always welcome to visit Westlake and see the classroom (or any other classroom) and count the impressive number of trophies on display.
