Tilden Elementary, really? Do they know it no longer exists??? Turanga_teach said it well. Last year was its final year. After years of struggle to keep the school open, the Board ultimately decided to close the school, largely because of facilities reasons. While I agree that the school had some major safety concerns, why is OUSD choosing to invest volunteers in a deserted school that no longer serves children? Why don't they send those volunteers on over to the new Preschool Center where students will actually be attending class in a couple of weeks?

I'm not saying it shouldn't happen, but this stands in rather sharp contrast to the amount of facilities attention given to Tilden Elementary when it ACTUALLY HAD KIDS IN IT. I remember teaching there when the building had no working fire alarm, the condemned portables were used as de facto homeless shelters and a squirrel once actually dropped out of the ceiling into a classroom. It annoys me that the district, having used the poor condition of the facilities as one of its reasons for closing the school, is using volunteer resources which could otherwise enhance student conditions elsewhere to make things more aesthetically pleasing for non-teaching personnel.
