Fourth-graders at Bentley School, upset by a recent Tribune report of theft from the Oakland hills firestorm memorial, raised $350 this week through a bake sale to restore it.
In doing so, they inspired their middle school classmates to donate proceeds from a recent fundraiser to the cause as well. In all, they will contribute $537.50 to the cause, school staff reports.
Wednesday was the 19th anniversary of the fire, which killed 25 people and destroyed thousands of homes. The memorial on Tunnel Drive and Hiller Road was dedicated in 1994.
