It wasn’t a close contest. Kaplan won 70 percent of the vote in last night’s mock election. It might have helped her cause that Don Perata wasn’t there, but who knows? (The reason given for the absence of one of the leading mayoral candidates — laryngitis — was announced by the teenage emcees at the beginning of the forum. “Don Perata, he’s sick…”)

School board incumbent Gary Yee edged out Ben Visnick by five votes. Here’s a short video I made of the event:

Great news! Students are astute young adults, waiting for their turn at bat. Applaud them for recognizing and through their votes supporting values that are paramount to us all! Rebecca Kaplan has the qualifications we all need. Thanks for posting this, and by the way, even when lobbyist, Don Perata does appear it doesn’t change the results:)

I’m not for or against Kaplan. I’m happy the youth voice is being heard and catered too. If they are our future, they deserve a great deal more respect and involvement. To keep that respect, they need to educate themselves on the issues and potential solutions so that they are informed citizens and not pawns in the hands of hucksters.
