This is a tragedy! I have a few very close friends that have been teaching at PRIDE for 4 years, and through an incredible amount of hard work, they have built classroom cultures that are both caring and high achieving. No school ever deserves to have their learning equipment stolen, but especially not this school! PRIDE has teachers that in 1 academic school year have literally achieved 1.5-3.0 years of reading growth on a rigorous authentic assessment (the “DRA”) with students that face tremendous learning challenges. In all this talk on other posts about excellent teachers, there are some at PRIDE that truly embody both professional values and commitment to students.

My heart goes out to all of the teachers, staff, and principal at East Oakland PRIDE. I remember when I first came to Oakland as a Teach For America corps member in 1997 and the reputation of Webster. Just this Friday I was at the school visiting Principal Viet Nguyen and was so heartened by the atmosphere of learning at the school. Now more than ever is a time to rally behind our schools, and this one in particular.

Sorry I skipped the word many as in officers……..It goes without saying that politicians cannot be believed or trusted to manage even a hemorrhoid(they aren’t worth half the pay they get). We are all about to find out just how much we needed those 80 officers patrolling the streets. What can you do if people don’t inform themselves and then vote.

Actually the OPOA concessions themselves wouldn’t have been enough. They would have helped but it also would have taken cuts elsewhere. Cuts the politicians weren’t willing to make…

Thats a union for you, two faced talk about brotherhood and all that. All these older vets had to do was pay some of their own benefits and they could have kept the 80 young officers. Of course they threw them right under the proverbial bus. Now that’s brotherly love!

It takes real low lifes to steal from a school. Is the District going to get grants to wire the K-5 like they have the middle and high schools?

Also, since OPD is short-staffed right now (due to both the Unions, our Mayor and the City Council) there ar only two or three investigators for burglaries for the entire city. Unless OPD makes this a priority they might not even have the manpower to investigate it. In that case it will probably happen again…
