Oakland Teacher Convention, here I come

As of Tuesday, 210 teachers from 90 schools had been selected by their fellow teachers to represent them at the three-day teacher convention, according to Ash Solar, the district staffer who co-chairs the Oakland school district’s Effective Teaching Task Force. (This story gives some context about what the task force is up to.)

I will be dropping in several times between this evening and Saturday, and I plan to blog from the event. Who knows, I might even tweet, too. Tonight there will be mostly speeches; the meatier discussions won’t happen until tomorrow.

Delegates: If you feel like sharing your impressions with a reporter, look for a tall woman with a skinny notebook, tapping people on the shoulder or otherwise awkwardly approaching them to ask questions. You could also, of course, email me after each day’s session at kmurphy(at)bayareanewsgroup.com or comment directly on the blog.

I’ll see you there! I’m going to be late, I’m in the lobby of the hotel in a virtual meeting.

I think the conference is going to be fun and get some good work done!

  • A Few Questions

What is the agenda for this conference/where was it published? Is the event open to the public? What is the role of parents? What is OEA’s role?

    Hi “A Few Questions”

OEA and OUSD are co-sponsering the event – the agenda is for teacher-representatives discuss and maybe even decide on what “effective teaching” looks like. Perhaps we’ll even come out of this with a new idea for teacher evaluation and professional development that makes more sense than the current system which seems to waffle from ineffective to a game of “gotcha.”

I don’t believe it’s open to the public. The OEA president gave an opening speech. I don’t have a final agenda but will try to get an electronic copy.

Who’s idea was it to do this on a friday… a day when the district already has a hard enough time getting enough subs?!?! And now 200 teachers are out for a district meeting? Please people, think of the practical implications of these great ideas!!!

My guess is that it was the same person who thought it would be a great idea to have 200 teachers out for 3 days less than a month before STAR testing.

Is this not something that could have been done during the summer?

Oh please, Stop complaining. OUSD teachers need some forum to get together and voice their concerns. We teachers took just ONE day off from work. We worked thursday pm and also all day saturday. Kids aren’t suffering, okay?
