Protesters were angry about the closures of five elementary schools. They said in speeches that by closing schools that are popular with parents and children in order to meet slashed budgets brought low by the economic collapse, the district was falling into doing the bidding of "the 1%".

The symbolic eviction notice was thus a response to the school closures.

At least that was my understanding.

I would add that there is an irony in that the state-admin-led rollout of like 30-50 small and charter schools was done by admin trained by the Broad Foundation, and overseen by a state admin funded by Broad and while Broad is quasi-liberal he is clearly in the top 1%.

I wasn't out there yesterday, but my colleague Robert Salonga said the OUSD administration building was served with a symbolic eviction notice. Not sure what that signified. Can anyone explain?
