Since they left none of the subsequent owners have been able to replicate their soups, though the current one is better than those in between.

So, first the important Q., were you able to find good Pho or other noodle soups?

Our tuk tuk driver and our guide in Cambodia were talking about how salaries in “government schools” were too low to attract enough educated and dedicated teachers, and how some are known to accept bribes in exchange for good grades on tests. They said anyone with any means (including our guide, but not the driver, who earns much less) enrolled their kids in a private school. Interesting to see how issues of teacher quality — and status and pay — are playing out on the other side of the world. I didn’t get a chance to visit a school in Vietnam, but we passed a couple that were in session on a Saturday.

Early this morning, wide awake from jet lag, I sifted through my inbox. I saw that people are talking about “mutual matching” of teachers and schools and transitional kindergarten possibly losing its funding. What else have I missed?
