Yes! The food there was delicious, varied and cheap. For the most part, very healthy, too. Lots of fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables along with the meat and noodles/rice. While there were plenty of higher-end restaurants, there seemed to be even more street kitchens -- family-run places with miniature plastic stools out on the sidewalk and one or two dishes on the menu. One of them, which is doing particularly well, cranks out fresh fruit smoothies to order, selling them for $1 each. I'll have to do a local restaurant tour now that I'm back.

I should have asked you to find the ex-owners of V's on Webster St. in Chinatown & asked them to return to Oaktown. They used to have the best Vietnamese soups in Oakland, possibly the Bay Area, until the family had the gumption to return to Vietnam where they could live like kings.

Since they left none of the subsequent owners have been able to replicate their soups, though the current one is better than those in between.

So, first the important Q., were you able to find good Pho or other noodle soups? :)

Thanks, all, for your notes! My sister and I had a wonderful and very exciting trip through Vietnam and part of Cambodia. Now I remember why I used to travel so much!

Our tuk tuk driver and our guide in Cambodia were talking about how salaries in "government schools" were too low to attract enough educated and dedicated teachers, and how some are known to accept bribes in exchange for good grades on tests. They said anyone with any means (including our guide, but not the driver, who earns much less) enrolled their kids in a private school. Interesting to see how issues of teacher quality -- and status and pay -- are playing out on the other side of the world. I didn't get a chance to visit a school in Vietnam, but we passed a couple that were in session on a Saturday.

Early this morning, wide awake from jet lag, I sifted through my inbox. I saw that people are talking about "mutual matching" of teachers and schools and transitional kindergarten possibly losing its funding. What else have I missed?
