Welcome to Inside Fantasy Sports.  You’re witnessing a momentous occasion, the very first post in what’s sure to be an Internet juggernaut.

But who’s got time for welcomes and self-congratulation when there’s football tonight?  For the first time in what seems like decades we’re mere hours away from a professional football game that means something and isn’t in either an arena or Canada!  Which means for the first time since the crushing end to a once-promising 2007 season it’s time for fantasy football!  Or was the crushing end part just me?

First up, the world champion New York Giants take on the Washington Redskins on NBC this afternoon at 4 p.m.  Not the biggest matchup from a fantasy perspective but there are a few players to watch.

Washington Redskins

Fantasy Stars

RB Clinton Portis: A one-time fantasy darling, Portis’ statistical star has been falling in recent years.  He’s spent quite a bit of time at less than 100% and the Redskins’ mediocrity hasn’t helped, and his prospects are less certain this year with the introduction of a new head coach and offensive system.  This game should give the first clues about whether he’ll carry your team or fill in on bye weeks.

WR Santana Moss: It’s stretching it a bit to call Moss a fantasy star but the pickings in Washington are slim, and I for one have him starting this week in two leagues due to an injury and a suspension.  If you’re in a similar situation you could do worse.

Waiver Wire Scouting

QB Jason Campbell: Speaking of Campbell, if you didn’t come out of the draft with a sure thing at QB he’s a player to watch.  Odds are pretty good he’s available in your league so if Zorn calls an aggressive game and he looks improved from last season he makes a viable boom-or-bust gamble, someone to stash on your bench in case he breaks out.

New York Giants

Fantasy Stars

WR Plaxico Burress: I’m not high on Burress, despite QB Eli Manning’s unexpected playoff performance last season.  They don’t have a lot of other receiving targets now that WR Amani Toomer is getting older and TE Jeremy Shockey has moved on so coverage will be pushed his way and they should be leaning on the run.

RB Brandon Jacobs: For being the reigning Super Bowl champions there’s not a lot on their roster to get excited about, is there?  They may be leaning on the run, but Jacobs may also face a lot of eight man fronts because opposing defensive coodinators know their personnel just as well as we do.

Waiver Wire Scouting

WR Steve Smith: Not that Steve Smith, the other one.  The former USC star is the Giants’ future at the position almost by default and the possibility exists that he may become their present fairly soon.  If he gets a lot of looks he may be worth stashing away on your bench until someone better comes along.
