Welcome to the first real edition of Fantasy on TV.  Every week when the TV schedule is announced we give you a rundown of who to watch in each game from a fantasy perspective, both stars who may be on your team and sleepers for you to scout, guys who may be on your league’s waiver wire waiting to be picked up if they look good on the field.

The Bay Area is getting four pretty good games this week.  At 10 a.m. we’ve got Rams at Eagles on KTVU and Jets at Dolphins on CBS5, at 1 p.m. we get Cardinals at 49ers on KTVU, our first taste of Mike Martz’s latest project, and at 5:15 p.m. on NBC11 it’s Bears at Colts.

Fox, 10 a.m.

St. Louis Rams

Fantasy Stars

RB Steven Jackson: Jackson is the only sure thing on what promises to be a bad Rams team.  His contract dispute is settled and veteran running backs don’t usually drop off much from missing camp so there’s not a lot of downside.  Of course if the passing game doesn’t improve he could face a whole lot of eight-man fronts.

QB Marc Bulger: Bulger, let’s face it, did not have a good year last year.  A one-time fantasy stalwart, he was a shell of his former self.  And he didn’t exactly ease concerns with his 28-of-48, two TD three INT preseason stat line.  This game is when we find out if last year was a fluke or if his much thinner receiver corps is going to hurt him.

WR Torry Holt: Speaking of the Rams thinner receiver corps, Torry Holt is pretty much it right now.  This is the first season he hasn’t had a solid target lined up at the opposite receiver spot - Drew Bennett is no Isaac Bruce, even the borderline geriatric version of recent years.  He’s going to have to deal with a lot more coverage.

Waiver Wire Scouting

WR Drew Bennett: “But Danny, didn’t you just say he’s not even as good as the guy the Rams just cut?”  Yes, and it’s impolite to interrupt.  The fact is Bennett is a starting wide receiver, and with defenses focused on stopping Holt he could see a lot of single coverage.  He could put up decent numbers by default.

TE Randy McMichael: Ok, ignore the fact that he’s a player on a bad team who never realized his potential and is (allegedly) a wife-beater.  He’s still on a run-first team that’s thin at receiver, two factors that usually result in good numbers from the tight end position.  If Bulger checks down a lot he could be worth a bench spot.

Philadelphia Eagles

Fantasy Stars

RB Brian Westbrook: He probably went either third or fourth in your draft, he’s facing an inexperienced defensive line and he’ll probably be protecting a lead.  If he’s on your team watch him dominate, if you’re facing him you probably want to watch the other 10 a.m. game.

QB Donovan McNabb: Cliche alert: Donovan McNabb is the NFL’s version of Rodney Dangerfield.  He just doesn’t get any respect.  He’s put up solid numbers for years with next to nothing at wide receiver and yet he’s always sliding in fantasy drafts due to the same unwarranted concerns.

Waiver Wire Scouting

WR Greg Lewis/Hank Baskett/DeSean Jackson: They should all get decent playing time while Reggie Brown heals and when he comes back one of them gets a spot as the #2.  Whoever looks like he’s winning the job is a candidate for a third or fourth receiver on your roster.

CBS, 10 a.m.

New York Jets

Fantasy Stars

QB Brett Favre: Star is pushing it.  I think he’ll have an average to bad year and possibly retire midseason.  But let’s face it, there’s not a lot of star power on the Jets.  Who else was I going to pick?

Waiver Wire Scouting

Actually, you should probably just avoid Jets players for now.  Neither of these teams are very good.  Why is CBS making us watch this game?

Miami Dolphins

Fantasy Stars

RB Ronnie Brown: I defer to Jeremiah for this one.

RB Ricky Williams: Despite the whole stoner thing he’s actually a very good running back.  He may be worth a pickup, at least until he’s caught driving a van made of pot into the country from Mexico.

Waiver Wire Scouting

QB Chad Pennington: Stop laughing.  He may have a notoriously weak arm and absolutely nobody to throw to, but their RB tandem is good enough that there should be a lot of single coverage.  Those short crossing routes add up.

Fox, 1 p.m.

Arizona Cardinals

Fantasy Stars

WR: Larry Fitzgerald: I don’t care if Kurt Warner is throwing to him, I don’t care if he’s on the Cardinals, he’s good.  He’s a rare talent and he’s going to be a superstar when he finally gets out of the desert.  And he’s going to be pretty good until then too.

WR Anquan Boldin: Speaking of trying to get out of the desert, Boldin is very publicly trying to either get paid or get out of town.  And what better motivation to have a career year is there than money?  I expect a big year from him.

Waiver Wire Scouting

QB Kurt Warner/Matt Leinart: If Warner burns the underrated Niners secondary, stash him on your bench, he could be a quality bye week replacement.  If Warner throws four picks and breaks something during an ugly sack stash Leinart away as future trade bait.

San Francisco 49ers

Fantasy Stars

RB Frank Gore: Gore has been going in the late first round in drafts because of his terrible 2007 season, but now former Niners offensive coordinator Jim Hostler is gone there’s a very good chance he’s going to return to 2006 form and become the steal of the first round.

Waiver Wire Scouting

WR Bryant Johnson/Isaac Bruce/Arnaz Battle/Josh Morgan: Mike Martz is a genius when it comes to turning second-rate quarterbacks and moderately to slightly talented wide receivers into fantasy superstars.  Nobody can deny that JT O’Sullivan is a second-rate quarterback so it stands to reason that one of those moderately to slightly talented receivers will break out.

NBC, 5:15 p.m.

Chicago Bears

Nobody on the Bears should be on your fantasy team.

Indianapolis Colts

Fantasy Stars

QB Peyton Manning: Sure he’s arguably the best quarterback in the league, but maybe there are ways to squeeze a few more fantasy points out of him.  Maybe three points per appearance in a commercial during the game?  Figure out a way to score Oreo licking?  The possibilities are endless.

WR Reggie Wayne: He’s taken the mantle from Marvin Harrison and become the best receiver on the Colts.  It’s a good position to be in.  I hear their QB has a laser rocket arm.

RB Joseph Addai: He’s not as good as Edgerrin James in his prime but if you’ve got Addai you’re doing pretty well.  In fact if you have anyone on the Colts offense you’re doing pretty well.  They’re pretty good.

Waiver Wire Scouting

WR Anthony Gonzalez: Marvin Harrison may come back from last season’s injuries, but then again he might not.  That’s the way of the NFL after all.  Players get old, they fade away, young guys step up to take their place.  Gonzalez is the young guy.  Keep an eye on him.  Remember: Laser rocket arm.
