Week 4 Start/Bench

Welcome to Part 2 of Late Post Theater, Start/Bench.  Like the Texans and Ravens before me I had to take an unscheduled early bye week (with Jeremiah providing an assist) but I’m back to continue uncovering hidden gems and exposing fantasy frauds.

But first an update on my Week 2 and current overall scores.

Team: Game (Season)
All-Start: 79 (169)
All-Bench: 68 (125)

All-Start Team

QB: Trent Edwards, BUF
WR: Lee Evans, BUF
WR: DeSean Jackson, PHI
WR: Vincent Jackson, SD
RB: Rashard Mendenhall, PIT
RB: Selvin Young, DEN
TE: Kellen Winslow Jr., CLE
K: Shaun Suisham, WAS
DEF: Denver

Always start whoever’s playing St. Louis, that’s Rule 1 of fantasy football this year.  Vincent Jackson should burn Deangelo Hall for at least one long TD when Hall goes for the interception.  Mendenhall should do pretty well in relief of Willie Parker and I’ve just got a good feeling about Selvin Young.

All-Bench Team

QB: Drew Brees, NO
WR: Jericho Cotchery, NYJ
WR: Dwayne Bowe, KC
WR: Chad Johnson, CIN
RB: Willis McGahee, BAL
RB: Matt Forte, CHI
TE: Antonio Gates, SD
K: Sebastian Janikowsi, OAK
DEF: Tampa Bay

The 49ers may not have a run defense but they certainly have a secondary, they showed that when they shut down Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson, plus Brees is missing his top two receiving targets.  You’ve probably benched Chad Johnson already so that’s no surprise.  As far as Forte, again, just going on a hunch.  And my Reach of the Week is Gates who you probably shouldn’t actually bench but who I think is going to have a subpar game, because of the quality of the Raiders’ linebackers in coverage and because I think they’ll have a lot of success going to Jackson and running to the outside so he won’t get many touches.

I have a bit of a crisis, my roommate is out of town and he wants me to set his lineup. The problem is he needs to drop people and cover his bye weeks, etc. His lineup is:

    Jay Cutler, QB vs. KC
    Drew Brees, QB vs. SF
    Adrian Peterson, RB @ TEN
    Justin Fargas, RB vs. SD
    Larry Johnson, RB vs. DEN
Willie Parker, RB vs. BAL - OUT
Nate Burleson, WR BYE - IR
    T.J. Houshmandzedeh, WR vs. CLE
    Laverneous Coles WR vs. NYJ
    Marvin Harrison WR BYE
    Roddy White, WR @ CAR
    Tony Scheffler TE @ KC
    Dallas Clark, TE BYE
    Seattle BYE
    Denver @ KC
    Stephen Gostkowski. K BYE

    In this league you can start: QB, RB (2), WR (2), TE (1), K (1), DST (1), WR/RB/TE (1)

Anyways, I have no idea who to start except for the obvious, Jay Cutler, Denver, Scheffler & Peterson. It also looks like I need to drop someone and pick up a kicker. I assume I need to let Nate Burleson go, but not sure who to pick up. The top 5 available kickers are:

    Matt Prater DEN @ KC
    John Casay CAR vs. ATL
    Joe Nedney SF @ NO
    David Akers PHI @ CHI
    Jason Elam ATL @ CAR

I kind of had this sprung on me and he just happens to be playing the best team in the league this week, so I’m sure he’s not expecting a win, but the other guy has a bunch of people on BYE and you never know :) Thought I’d ask you all this and try and give him at least a sporting chance, even though this feels like I’m cheating on an exam :p

Thanks again for all the help, don’t know how much I appreciate this :) Gonna sneak one more fast question in: Just picked up Favre as a FA, so Favre or Roethlisberger this week? (The Ravens scare me after watching Ben last week and I’m sure Favre will try and play a strong game after being embarrassed Monday, thoughts?)

Here’s what my starting lineup would be:

    QB: Jay Cutler
    RB: Adrian Peterson
    RB: Larry Johnson
    WR: TJ Houshmandzadeh
    WR: Roddy White
    TE: Tony Scheffler
    Flex: Laveranues Coles

Defense is obviously Denver. As for a kicker, drop Burleson (unless it’s a keeper league…actually, even if it’s a keeper league) and pick up Akers. Either Philly will run up the score or Chicago will keep them out of the end zone and force a field goal, either way Akers wins.

Finally, this week go with Favre. The Ravens are giving up an average of 91.5 passing yards per game. Stay away from them.
