Fantasy on TV for Sept. 21-22

We’ve just got the Niners and Raiders for day games and to make it worse the Niners are stuck with the Lions, who have been a fantasy wasteland since Barry Sanders retired.  The Bills are interesting, though.  They’re looking more and more like a contender every week.

10 a.m. Sept. 21: Raiders at Bills, CBS
1 p.m. Sept. 21: Lions at 49ers, Fox
5:15 p.m. Sept. 21: Cowboys at Packers, NBC
5:30 p.m. Sept. 22: Jets at Chargers, ESPN

The Curious Case: Chris Johnson

Like many of you, I really did not know who this guy was two weeks ago. I was aware that he was a first-round pick and that the Titans really liked him, but I certainly wasn’t going around barking out his 40 times or his college stats. And, I didn’t draft him.

For the few of you who still don’t know who Chris Johnson is, a quick refresher is probably in order.

Week 2 Recap and Week 3 Question Submissions

How was that for a week, huh?  A great Monday night game, a Raiders blowout, a Niners overtime win, a controversial (by which I mean wrong) call at the end of the Broncos-Chargers game and come-from-behind wins by the Colts and Panthers.  A whole season of surprises and drama in two days.

On the fantasy front we’re witnessing a changing of the guard.  Using the default Yahoo scoring (I know not everyone uses Yahoo but, let’s face it, most people do, plus they use pretty standard scoring) Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer, two of the top fantasy quarterbacks going into the season, combined for 17 points and have 34 between them on the season.  Aaron Rodgers, who had to fight for his job and may not have been drafted in your league, scored 25 this week and has 45 in two games.  Things have shifted.

The same thing is happening with running backs.  #1 overall pick LaDanian Tomlinson (3 this week, 13 this year) has fewer points than Michael Turner (4, 38), Julius Jones (19, 24), LenDale White (11, 21) and Chris Perry (12, 14).

So how can a fantasy owner make sense of it all?  How do you know who’s going to break out, which stars will recover and which unknowns will set the league on fire?

Ask us, of course.  Ask your questions in this post’s comments and we’ll answer.

Gametime Decision for Week 2

First off, Houston and Baltimore are not playing.  The game got moved back to November 9 due to the hurricane.  If you have any Texans or Ravens, pull them out of your starting lineup right now.

Now that that’s out of the way, final calls (subject to change until 9:30 a.m. Sunday):

Playing

LaDanian Tomlinson, RB, SD
Ryan Grant, RB, GB
Laveranues Coles, WR, NYJ
Reggie Brown, WR, PHI

Out

Jeff Garcia, QB, TB
Marques Colston, WR, NO
Dallas Clark, TE, IND
Jerry Porter, WR, JAX
Andre Johnson, Todd Heap, Matt Schaub, Willis McGahee, Ray Rice and the rest of the Texans and Ravens because the game was postponed.

Week 2 Start/Bench

Most fantasy analysts don’t follow up with their predictions.

I am not most analysts.

All season I’ll keep a running score of my All-Start Team and my All-Bench Team to see who’s winning.  How did I do?

Team: Game (Season)
All-Start: 90 (90)
All-Bench: 57 (57)

My All-Start team included Michael Turner.  My All-Bench team’s wide receiver corps (Torry Holt, Laveranues Coles, Ted Ginn) scored a total of one point.

So what do my apparent psychic powers tell me this week?

Fantasy on TV for Sept. 14-15

Neither the Niners nor the Raiders are in prime time and both are away so we’re getting two local games this weekend. To avoid analyzing them every weekend, and because they have maybe one decent fantasy play between them, I’m going to focus on their opponents for the most part.

They’ll get some print but not a lot and less as time goes on. It’s not bias, just logistics. There’s only so much to say about Frank Gore.

10 a.m. Sept. 14: Raiders at Chiefs, CBS
1 p.m. Sept. 14: 49ers at Seahawks, Fox; Chargers at Broncos, CBS
5:15 p.m. Sept. 14: Steelers at Browns, NBC
5:30 p.m. Sept. 15: Eagles at Cowboys, ESPN
