Fantasy on TV for Oct. 5-6

No Raiders so we get to see more teams than usual this week, plus we don’t have to watch the Raiders choke in the fourth quarter.  The prime time teams are the same - why the schedulers thought we’d want to see the Steelers every week is beyond me - but we get some new blood in the daytime games, plus a choice for the first time in what seems like ages.

Also, at the bottom of this post, is a list of the teams we’ve seen and how many times.  No reason really, I just find it interesting.

10 a.m. Oct. 5: Seahawks at Giants, Fox
10 a.m. Oct. 5: Chargers at Dolphins, CBS
1 p.m. Oct. 5: Patriots at 49ers, CBS
5:15 p.m. Oct. 5: Steelers at Jaguars, NBC
5:30 p.m. Oct. 6: Vikings at Saints, ESPN

Fox, 10 a.m.

Seattle Seahawks

Fantasy Star

RB Julius Jones: Beating up on the 49ers was what Jones needed to get on track as a decent fantasy option.

Player to Watch

QB Matt Hasslebeck: He did pretty well considering the state of his wide receiver corps and how he’s getting some of those players back.  Look for his stats to start improving.

New York Giants

Fantasy Stars

QB Eli Manning: Go back in time three months (You all have time machines, right?) and ask the past version of yourself which Manning brother would be the best fantasy play, and when they say Peyton inform yourself of the strange future in which we live.

RB Brandon Jacobs: He may not be at the top of his game this week, the Seahawks’ pass defense is weaker than their run defense so they may have a pass-happy gameplan, but he remains a solid starter if you don’t have an option with a better matchup.

Player to Watch

WR Amani Toomer: The De La Salle product (Seems like everyone came from DLS.) becomes the #1 option this week against a weak pass defense.  If you need a bye week replacement pick him up, not just for this week but because you have a player on the Rams, Raiders or Lions on your team.

CBS, 10 a.m.

San Diego Chargers

Fantasy Stars

QB Phillip Rivers: Rivers?  Still pretty good.

RB LaDanian Tomlinson: He won’t do as well as he did against the Raiders but he does seem to be showing signs of improvement.

WR Chris Chambers: That’s right, this is the same list as last week.  They haven’t changed a whole lot since then.

Player to Watch

RB Darren Sproles: This is the same too!  But for a different reason.  If his carries start to drop as LT gets healthy try to trade him to whoever owns LT as insurance.

Miami Dolphins

Fantasy Star

RB Ronnie Brown: Jeremiah’s man-crush broke out in a huge way against the Patriots a couple weeks ago and becomes a must-start until he proves it was a fluke.

Player to Watch

QB Chad Pennington: Yes, he still has a hilariously weak arm, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a decent fantasy option.  70 five yard passes nets you the same score as ten 35 yard passes.

CBS, 1 p.m.

New England Patriots

Fantasy Star

WR Randy Moss: Oh how the mighty have fallen.  Randy Moss was probably the first receiver taken in your league’s draft and now he’s doing so poorly he’s on many waiver wires.  And for good reason.  He’s putting up terrible numbers.  Ask any Raiders fan what they expect to happen next.

Player to Watch

RB Sammy Morris: He’s the team leader in carries for the season for some reason so he’s the most likely candidate to benefit from the Niners’ hilariously inept run defense.

San Francisco 49ers

Fantasy Star

RB Frank Gore: Ronnie Brown brutalized the Patriots’ defense in the last game the Pats played.  Gore is a better back than Brown but the Patriots defense will be playing to regain pride so he may not get better numbers but he should still have a good game.

Player to Watch

QB JT O’Sullivan: Just when he was starting to get some buzz he goes and has an awful game.  A fumble, two picks in the end zone and countless sacks probably cost the Niners the game.  He’s probably worth a spot on your bench but until he gets over his psychological inability to get rid of the ball on a broken play he’s not an every-week starter.

NBC, 5:15 p.m.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Fantasy Star

QB Ben Roethlisberger: He has not had a good few weeks.  He may bounce back but it’s time to start getting nervous.

Player to Watch

RB Mewelde Moore: That’s right, due to injuries he’s the new starting running back.  As such he should be on your fantasy radar…any starter is worth some attention, even if it’s Mewelde Moore.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Fantasy Stars

RB Fred Taylor: He’s finally showing signs of age and his stats are down but he’s still doing pretty well.  Of course he’s starting to be overshadowed by…

RB Maurice Jones-Drew: MJD has 21 fewer carries but a 4.4 yard per carry average as compared to Taylor’s 3.6 so it wouldn’t surprise me to see his carries start to rise.

Player to Watch

QB David Garrard: I was high on Garrard in the preseason and he hasn’t lived up to it, but I still think he has breakout potential.

ESPN, 5:30 p.m. Oct. 6

Minnesota Vikings

Fantasy Star

RB Adrian Peterson: The ultimate fantasy star for the immediate future, he’s an every-week starter no matter what the circumstances, but he should have an even better game than usual thanks to DT Sedrick Ellis’ injury.

Player to Watch

WR Sidney Rice: He hasn’t had a great year but he has a lot of raw talent, if the Vikings get better play out of the quarterback position he could break out.  Of course that’s a big if.

New Orleans Saints

Fantasy Stars

QB Drew Brees: Yes, I said to bench him against the Niners secondary last week.  Yes, he ripped them apart and embarrassed them repeatedly.  I stand corrected.  Brees is very, very good.

RB Reggie Bush: Bush continues to develop as an NFL running back, abandoning his pure-speed college style for a more balanced approach.  And it’s working.

Player to Watch

RB Deuce McAllister: Deuce came back in a big way last week.  Microfracture surgery has been known to end careers but he looked strong.  If he keeps this up he could become valuable as a touchdown vulture if not the featured back.
