Sorry I haven’t been posting lately, but after Schaub’s performance the last few weeks, I was compelled to make my return.
The Texans signal-caller has made good on many predictions that this would be his breakout year, passing for more than 900 yards and six touchdowns in his past three games.
This will come as little shock to many of you who have been paying attention to this University of Virginia product. Schaub has consistently shown signs of breakout potential, both as Michael Vick’s backup in Atlanta and during his injury-shortened first season as a starter last year.
Although his nine touchdowns and nine interceptions are hardly impressive at first glance, he averaged about eight yards per attempt and was coming off his two best games when he went out last year.
Entering the 2008 campaign, there was reasonable expectations that he could become one of they year’s breakout players, maybe something akin to Eli Manning’s recent performances (about 3,500 yards and 20+ TDs).
After two games, though, it wasn’t looking so good. Schaub opened the season with five interceptions and just one TD while barely 50 percent of his passes.
But just as he was being fit for his bust tag, Schaub broke out with a 3-TD game in a narrow loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. As luck would have it, though, he was injured in the game and missed his next contest.
In his first game back, Schaub ran in the winning touchdown and threw for 379 yards. He was even better last week, leading the Texans to another victory while compiling a QB rating of 124.1 and tossing two more TDs.
Playing against a horrible Cincinnati team this week, Schaub suddenly looks like a must-play. He has a solid running back in Steve Slaton, a bonafide stud at wide receiver in Andre Johnson and even has a nice play-making tight end in Owen Daniels.
It’s a little bit of a concern that Schaub has been sacked 12 times in just six games, but if you’re looking for a QB who’s best days are still ahead of him, Schaub is a great pickup.
