The weather was drizzly, my friend was running late and I was standing on the corner of Vallejo and Polk in San Francisco.

To make things a little bit more gloomy, when I hailed a taxi to get to my destination, the cabbie said that my outfit made me look like a bellhop in a fancy uniform. Note to self: don’t pair my black vest with my red button down and black tie.

But all this didn’t dissuade me from going to the opening of the org-couture (in case you didn’t catch that, I wittily combined ‘organic’ and ‘couture’) store, Eco Citizen.

When my friend Alice finally arrived we entered the modest, chic minimalist store, it was already packed with people:

Seeing as though I have had this unbelievable craving for cheese lately, I managed to make a b-line to the table with the food.

I loved the design ethos of the store - it was fun, but not cheesy; minimal, but exciting; artistic, but not pretentious. I especially LOVED the paper planes in the store window:

When I had my fill of cheese, figs, Trader Joe crostinis (those were SO good) and other delectable treats, I had the chance to meet Michael Carbaugh (creative director) and Joslin Van Arsdale (director of the store).

I was even more pleased to meet the talented Sara Shepherd. She greeted me with open arms - literally. I wrote about her modernized Alice in Wonderland collection at the Gen Art show in August.

Shepherd’s designer garments are just some of the fair trade, sweatshop-free, organic, “green” labels featured at the store. The store also includes garments from Turk+Taylor, Del Forte Denim, Ciel and Kelly B.

I was all a twitter with the 3/4 length check shirts

To go along with the Earth-friendly evening, they gave away those energy efficient light bulbs. This way, you can save money on your electricity and save money to by some garb from here!

Eco Citizen is located at 1488 Vallejo St. in San Francisco. Call 415-614-0100 for more info. And tell them Dino-Ray sent you.
