On Friday, I made my way out to the de Young in San Francisco for a sneak peek at the garments for the St. Vincent de Paul Society of San Francisco’s Discarded to Divine event hosted by the Academy of Art University.
“Animal Collective 4: Flora & Fauna” by Kristin Farr. Made from a fleece blanket, high heels and of course, stuffed animals!
Actually, I’ve seen almost all the garments made from used clothing. I am a part of the jury that judged the items, remember?

Anyways, it was good to refresh my memory of these rags-to-ready-to-wear designs.
That said, I am just going to give you a considerable taste of some of the garments that are in contention for the fashionably philanthropic event.

“Frank Lloyd Wright panel dress” by Shannon Maxham, made from slacks, shirts, a skirt, woman’s jacket and a sweater set.

Berkeley based designer, Cari Borja’s piece called “Cotton Candy Kelp” is an exhibition piece (not judged) and is constructed out of scraps of fabric, reused lace and buttons.

“Ida Dress: Shades of Blue,” Katy Turner from FIDM. Made from four hotel bedsheets

Don’t these remind you of Angela’s “fleurshawns” from Project Runway 3?
“Fragonard Groom” by Milen Krastev. Made from denim jeans and men’s shirts
It’s like Mozart meets David Bowie meets Levi’s.
“Faultline Dress” by Amanda Cleary from the Academy of Art University. Made from men’s and women’s pants.
Ooooh! I get it, FAULTLINE! Very savvy.
“Asawa Lines Gown” by Richelle Valenzuela from the Academy of Art University. Made from a curtain.
It’s like Mrs. Roper meets Barbarella - and a lot more cooler.
You wanna see more? Well you have to wait until April 26.

I absolutely agree with the “fleurshawns” comment for Katy Turner’s “Ida Dress”.
