Do I really enjoy Amanda Bynes?

…yes, I actually do.

A couple of nights ago I watched Sydney White starring Amanda Bynes and I actually liked it. It was a fun youth-infused modernization of Snow White. More than that, I actually think Amanda Bynes is cute and talented.

I think I was under this unstated pressure to not like her because she falls under that umbrella of all those Hollywood coated gals that spread their party girl lactose all over tabloids and media.

Luckily, we haven’t seen Amanda step out of a car showing us her “area” and she hasn’t been pasted all over the news with a DUI. She’s a cool gal - and I could vouch for that because I was lucky enough to interview her when she was in Newark promoting her clothing line, dear for Steve & Barry’s.

So until she is seen in a sex tape or comes out with her own pointless reality show, she is good in my book.

P.S. I loved her as Penny in Hairspray

SAG Awards: Amanda is all grown up!

As the pigtailed Penny Pingleton in “Hairspray,” Amanda Bynes was a naive little girl in a jumper, but here, she impresses the crowd in this strapless Marchesa gown with stunning Goddess-worthy decollatage and a rich color that compliments her.

Sarah, Amanda, Venus and Steve & Barry come to the CANNERY!

It seems like the “nothing over $20″ retailer, Steve & Barry’s is finally headed to San Francisco - the Cannery to be exact.

The store that boasts discount collections from celebs like Sarah Jessica Parker, Amanda Bynes and now Venus Williams (set to be unveiled Nov. 14) will be opening their 2nd Bay Area location on Oct. 31 (a.k.a. Halloween).

SJP’s “Bitten” line

Amanda and her “dear” collection

Venus goes the sporty route with Eleven

The store is located at 2801 Leavenworth in San Francisco. Visit www.steveandbarrys.com for more info.

I sure have been blogging a lot about this store lately…

P.S. Just to clarify - Venus, SJP and Miss Bynes won’t actually be at the store opening - but their collections will!

Is this really Amanda Bynes???

When I got back from my relaxing trip to the Lonestar State, I find this blog comment awaiting my approval:

hey guys its amanda im so glade that everyone likes that costume! i had such a fun time playing her and the other people in the movie were great(: don’t forget that there are costumes for their charecters too well im going to go but i want to say thanks to all of my fans without you guys i wouldnt get to wear this costume so thanks!!

i love you all,
amanda bynes

Hmmm…is someone trying to punk me?

First off, there are so many typos and grammar errors in this comment. This make it obvious that it’s not her. Secondly, do you really think Amanda would take time out of her busy schedule to look at my blog?

Actually, when I interviewed her at Steve & Barry’s, we became BFF, so maybe it is her.

Still, I doubt this is her commenting on my blog. Whoever it was, they need to go back to English 101. This comment reads like a poorly educated mall girl who’s diet consists of Orange Julius, soft pretzels and corn dogs.

But if it is Amanda, I’d like to tell her, “Thanks for reading my blog!!!”

Lost soundbits from AMANDA BYNES…

So when I had my interview with Amanda Bynes last week, I had lots of quotes. This is an exchange between the two of us that never made the cut in a previous post on her appearance at Steve & Barry’s.

So here’s the set up: we were gushing about the label, Nina Ricci and then this happened…

Amanda: She (Nina Ricci) is clearly an amazing designer…or is it a guy that does the designs now?

Me: Ummm…I don’t know. I think it’s still her. I’m a fashion writer I should know this.

Amanda: And I am a fashion designer, I should know this.

Me: Hmmm…

Amanda: Well, neither of us knows the answer so it’s fine!

I had a total sartorial brain fart. I really didn’t know the answer to this. I felt dumb, but Amanda didn’t let it compromise my journalistic integrity.

Turns out, it is a guy who is the head of the Ricci house…his name is Olivier Theyskens. Amanda was right. I was wrong. Busted me!

Our “dear” Amanda…

Yesterday at NewPark Mall in Newark, the gleaming tiles of the shiny mall were void of foot traffic. Why, you ask? Everyone was at Steve & Barry’s awaiting the arrival of pop sensation Amanda Bynes.

I have never seen one line form so fast…

And that was only the outside - the line continued to snake around inside the store…

These kids were screaming and Amanda wasn’t even anywhere in sight!

You can’t see it, but the line went ALL around the store…

Nonetheless, Amanda Bynes’s line, dear is a casual-chic collection of versatile, youthful clothing that includes everything to dress you from head to toe - shirts, jeans, dresses, shoes, hats, jewelry and everything in between. Did I mention that there is not one price tag more than $19.98.

Amongst the squeals of “AMANDA WE LOVE YOU!” and ear bleeding screams of Amanda’s adoring fans, I had the chance to chat with her about “dear,” her shopping pleasures, her favorite designers and her own admiration for the SF Bay Area.

“I love it here,” she says with the utmost excitement. “The air feels cleaner. I don’t know what it is but I love being here.”

When I say excited, I mean EXCITED. She was full of pep and her energy was infectious.

Bynes signed autographs for her 5 mile long line of fans

Her line is very youthful, funky and very teen-appropriate. But to Amanda, the cost is really appealing.

“It’s affordable,” she says as her plastic bangles clang together joyfully. “It’s trendy. I love the skinny jeans and these shoes that just came in yesterday are so cute.”

She took off her shoes to actually show me. The glittery ballet flats were, in fact, an in-vogue item.

“It’s bright and colorful,” she says. “These skinny jeans are only $14 and there’s something about the way they fit that I love. I also love the hoodies and the shoes.”

She REALLY loves her skinny jeans. She went on and on about them and I couldn’t blame her. They looked great. I knew she was genuine about the love for her line because she was dressed from head-to-toe in “dear.”

“I love the way that these jeans fit,” she says as she lifts her leg and examines them further. “You can dress up or dress them down – I love everything about them.”

She almost made me want to get a pair for myself.

Sure, she loves her “dear” jeans, but what designers does she admire?

“I really admire J. Brand jeans,” she says as she takes a swig from her water bottle. “They do a really good job of creating a look.”

She ponders a little more…

“I like Nina Ricci - who does Reese Witherspoon’s dresses,” she gushes.

Once she said Nina Ricci, I gushed right along with her. We started to chat it up like two red carpet commentators.

“She just wore one of her dresses to the premiere of Rendition and I loved it.”

Anyone else?

“I have this Alexander Wang cashmere tank top sweater dress that I love,” she says.

When I went back to the mob of Bynes-fanatics, I was amazed. I felt the excitement in the air. It reminded me of when I was younger and I met Alan Thicke at the grand opening of a mall…ok, not EXACTLY like that but you get the picture.

I can admit that I am a skeptic of “celebrity designers,” but in all honesty, this collection truly reflects Amanda’s spunky nature and youthful appeal. It’s bright, it’s funky, it’s teen-appropriate - it’s “dear.”

P.S. Can I just say that I LOVED Amanda in “Hairspray”?

Amanda Bynes is a “dear”!

With her candy-coated, girl-next-door smile, Amanda Bynes made America fall in love with her sweet beginnings on Nickelodeon’s All That and in the more recent hit movie musical Hairspray. On Oct. 11, Bynes brings her latest venture to the Bay Area, but it’s not a movie or a television show - it’s her new fashion line for Steve & Barry’s called dear.

The comedic actress will be at the Steve & Barry’s in Newark’s New Park Mall to unveil her new collection of fun, tween-appropriate clothing and accessories based on her own personal style. The mix-and-match versatility of the clothing line allows girls to look fun-loving and casual chic all for $19.98 or less.

The casual apparel retailer is no stranger to celebrity designers. The store houses the Bitten collection by fashion maven and actress Sarah Jessica Parker and a line by NBA superstar Stephon Marbury. The new dear collection will definitely be in good company.

Bynes is kind of growing on me. I didn’t like her at first, but then I saw her in Hairspray, I thought she was fun and adorably ditzy. Then I saw some of her casual wear for this collection and it was actually kind of cute. At the rate things are going, I am even inclined to see her new movie, Sydney White.

Bynes will be signing autographs starting at 5 p.m. Located at 2003 New Park Mall. Call 510-494-8265 or visit www.steveandbarrys.com to take a look at some of the pieces from the “dear” collection.

Best DRESSED of the week: Aug. 31, 2007

Let’s start off with the obvious…

That is one of the greatest answers of all time such as for example in Iraq and in Bolivia ergo the education system afford maps and therefore the, uh such as we are here and it’s good to have a, uh, such as the influence. Thank you, such as vis-a-vis, therefore.

  • When I turn 70 years old, I want to be just like David Wolfe, creative director of The Doneger Group. He spends his day scoping out MTV, trends and hanging out in boutiques to give us a reliable fashion forecast. Check out his report on the top ten trends of the upcoming season. I wish I were as cool as him. He is definitely my new hero.
  • Thanks to MySpace, FASHION can truly be your friend alongside your ex-boy/girlfriend and those former high school classmates who you added as friends but you know you will never talk to. Designers like Alexander McQueen and Donna Karan already have active pages and ad campaigns on the narcotic social networking site. With this new page, fashionistas finally have a place that they can prove who knows more about fashion. Check out this video review here:

  • Gearing up for her next album, “As I Am,” Alicia Keys has turned down the volume a bit on her glam and looks a lot more…natural, relaxed and effortless. She still looks hot though.

  • Rilo Kiley is hot. The lead singer, Jenny Lewis is hot. The name of their newest album, Under the Blacklight is hot. Their Sept. 6 performance at the San Francisco’s Warfield will be hot. This picture of the group is hot:

  • I think Jenny may be on the verge of being a style icon this year - and maybe in the upcoming years as well. Her ’60s-meets-emo-meets-Parisian style can be duplicated but there’s a fashionable aura around her that makes her own the look.

…and of course she will never live her role as Shelley Long’s daughter on Troop Beverly Hills (one of my favorite movies I might add) down. She was a performer long before Rilo Kiley was a glimmer in her eye. See if you can spot her in this clip:

  • Watch out you cell-phone gabbin’ teenagers! A law banning texting and talking on your cell phone whilst driving - even hands free - is on the verge of being passed by the California Senate. Wouldn’t it be easier just to get rid of teen drivers altogether?
  • First Sarah Jessica Parker, then Amanda Bynes and now Venus Williams! Retailer Steve & Barry’s has teamed up with the tennis diva for a line of active lifestyle clothing and footwear called EleVen.

  • Click here to see what could possibly be the worst reality competition ever. MTV has sunk to a new low.
  • I have officially been FAB-U-LIZED by the Fabarzzi at Team Sugar! Check it out by clicking on the pic below:

Best DRESSED of the week: Aug. 17, 2007

Yes, I know this is late, but I am on a stressful moving schedule!

  • Congrats to Jenna Bush and her engagement to former White House aide, Henry Hager.! What am I going to wear to the wedding?
  • So The Invasion comes out this weekend. I just saw it and can I just say that this is how the world would be if everyone stuck to a monochromatic color palette - they would have glassy eyes, lack emotion and vomit on each other every now and then.

  • I know I am totally behind on this, but I just now jumped on the whole StyleMob.com bandwagon. It’s a site where you can rate how stylish people are and more. It’s kind of like that site, HotorNot.com, except less trashy.
  • Speaking of obsessions, a good substitute to fill my Project Runway void has been The Fashionista Diaries on Soap Net. It’s a reality show (what else would it be?) about six young fashion mavens working in three aspects of the industry that doesn’t involve actual design: beauty, journalism and PR. I am already hooked and jealous at the same time - why do these kids get to be all fabulous in NY? Why can’t it be me? WHY?! WHY?! Ok. I’m not bitter or anything.
  • First the Backstreet Boys make a comeback, now the Spice Girls are floating to the top of pop culture with their greatest hits album and their exclusive tour! This is so 1997! Check out their swanky bejeweled CD cover.

  • So is anyone else excited as much as me to see those bubbly gallivanting tweens and teens in High School Musical 2?….Anyone? Anyone? Am I the only one who will be watching it over and over again to learn the dance routines? Anyone? Anyone? And finally, does anyone else think that Zac Efron is REALLY tan…I mean, REALLY TAN.
  • Desperate housewife, Teri Hatcher is makin’ it hot as the new face of Badgley Mischka. She ain’t lookin’ like no housewife to me:

  • Speaking of cover girls, Suri Cruise has been contracted to be the poster child for Baby Gap later this year. Ain’t that cute? She’ll be making more money than me in NO TIME!
  • She’s spicy! She has an equally hot husband! She’s a mother! She says “MAYJAH!” a lot! Now, she writes! In her new book, That Extra Half an Inch: Hair, Heels and Everything in Between, Victoria Beckham gives some fashion advice. For instance, she will tell you how to NOT smile every time you pose for the camera and she will also tell you why you will never be as fabulous as she is.
  • Remember when there were really fun and happy hip-hop songs like this? It seemed so long ago…

  • One of my other reality show obsessions has come to an end - So You Think You Can Dance announced the winner on Thursday night and it, unfortunately wasn’t me, but it was one of my faves of the show: Sabra Johnson! She hip-hopped, jazzed, paso doble’d and contemporary danced her way to win the most prestigious titles in the WORLD! Ok…not really, but from the moment I saw her fancy fro, I knew she would win! And might I say…I was one of the first fans to ask her to be my friend on MySpace. Congrats Sabra!

  • The Kitson boutique in Beverly Hills had a moment of rumbling chaos this past Thursday - no, it wasn’t an earthquake - it was something better (or worse, depending how you look at it) Paris Hilton launched her new clothing line! It was reported that customers started to riot, mountains started to crumble, the seas boiled and even the four horsemen of the apocalypse started to get irritated because they could snag a pair of her new jeans.
  • Ummm…Amanda Bynes launched her clothing line, Dear the other day. It’s cute and all, but does she think she’s a fashion icon? If so, someone lied to her.
  • When will this celebrity fashion designer thing end? Well, Jessica Simpson gives us a taste with her fall collection. It’s kind of sexy…in that whole “forestry, backwoods, log cabin, Paulina Bunyan” kind of way.

  • Jordache is cool again! Well, if you put Heidi Klum topless in anything, then it’s a surefire way to bring it back in style.

    HAIRSPRAY makeover: PENNY PINGLETON

Tracy’s naive girl-next-door BFF, Penny Pingleton (played by Amanda Bynes) has this sense of small-town girl Osh Kosh B’gosh style - but that doesn’t mean it can’t be translated into something for 2007. In fact, her jumper-style dresses are so HOT right now!

2 Pocket Jumper Dress from Wet Seal, $16.50

Cotton Blouse from Forever 21, $14.80

    Keds Eleanor Slip-ons from Piperlime.com, $31.99

…90% of the time, Penny always has a lollipop in her hand. So, for a whimsical accessory, you should complete the outfit with this:

Ring Pops from TheWorldofCandy.com, $18 for a box of 26
