1000 issues of Entertainment Weekly

Every week, I look forward to my issue of Entertainment Weekly. I am in love with this magazine. No lie - I read it from cover to cover. Okay, well, maybe not ALL of the material, but I do eat it all up - especially the back page columns (Diablo Cody is my favorite.)

But the most recent issue is special - it’s their 1000th issue! How exciting is that?!

The mag is filled with lists of anything and everything involving pop culture for the last 25 years: the 1,000 best movies, TV shows, albums, books, videogames, technology and of course, pop culture style moments.

Of course I went straight to the latter. According to the witty folks at EW here are the top 10 Pop Culture Moments that Rocked Fashion:

1.) Madonna at the MTV Video Music Awards, 1984

This was groundbreaking and kinda hot. Who knew that writhing on the ground in a hideous skanky wedding gown whilst singing “Like a Virgin” would make Madge an international icon? Acutally, when I watch the clip now, I think it’s kinda awkward - but still hot.

2.) The Opening Credits of ‘Sex and the City,’ 1998

How could you not include this? SJP looked cutesy in her tutu.

3.) Michael Jackson in “Thriller,” 1983

I had this album. It was a prized piece of vinyl next to my Mickey Mouse Disco album. Actually, I liked everything but this song. It used to scare the crap out of me - and then the video came out and I became the youngest person ever to have a heart attack - but now I have made my peace with the song and it makes me smile.

Ah Michael. I remember when you were rockin’ it. Now where have you gone? Well, at least we have these blissful memories of when you defined pop culture in a trailblazing manner rather than a scandalous one. And those space-age pleather jackets were the best thing in the world -even if my parents never bought me one.

4.) Sharon Stone at the Oscars, 1996

Big deal - I used to wear shirts from the Gap all the time.

5.) Kurt Cobain, 1991

A great loss for the music world. He was the king of grunge and had a style that defined a generation.

Victoria Beckham is the Worst Dressed?

That’s BLASPHEMY!

Well, it’s about 65 percent true. But fashion pundit, Mr. Blackwell put Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham on the top of his 48th annual worst-dressed list.

Not one of her best moments. Now I can see why Mr. Blackwell put her on the list

Forget the fashion spice, wearing a skirt would suffice! In one skinny-mini monstrosity after another, pouty posh can really wreck-em.

Ouch.

Here are his quips on some of this year’s fashion disasters:

No. 2: Amy Winehouse—”Exploding beehives above, tacky polka-dots below, she’s part ’50s carhop horror.”

No. 3: Mary-Kate Olsen—”She resembles a tattered toothpick—trapped in a hurricane.”

No. 4: Fergie—”Yes, when it comes to couture chaos, guess it’s all in a name!”

Bravo Mr. Blackwell. You hit the nail right on the head. Although I don’t think Olsen is a toothpick, she’s more of a used strand of dental floss. And thanks for putting Fergie on there.

Other A-listers on this list of dishonor included Kelly Clarkson, Eva Green, Avril Lavigne, Jessica Simpson, Lindsay Lohan and Alison Arngrim.

Still, with my undying infatuation with Victoria, I will have to say that there are more hellacious dressers out there. There’s always Britney, but that is way too easy. Here’s what he said about her absence from the list:

I felt that it was inappropriate at this time to make comment, when her personal life is in such upheaval. I hope 2008 is a better year for her.

Good form Mr. Blackwell.

But back to Posh - I have an allegiance to Victoria. She takes fashion risks, but homegirl does needs to eat a Big Mac or something.

His Fabulous Fashion Independents list included: Reese Witherspoon (couldn’t agree more), Jemima Khan (okay), Beyonce (I agree to a certain point), Angelina Jolie (definitely), Helen Mirren (classic beauty), Nicole Kidman (yes, indeed - except for the picture below), Katie Holmes (I have something to say about her - please read below), Kate Middleton (I could live with that), Katherine Heigl (breakout beauty) and Cate Blanchett (she can do no wrong).

Kidman was a little too fashion forward here. She was so forward that NASA called and wanted their outfit back. AP Photo/Rob Griffith

The wonderous style of Reese. I can’t argue with Mr. Blackwell for putting her on his “Fabulous Fashion Independents” list. AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster

As for Miss Holmes-Cruise being on his “best” list, she is apparently BFF with Posh so there is this interesting paradox of Holmes being on the best list and Posh being the worst. They have even garnered so many comparisons with their styles. Case and point: click here.

But after thinking about it a bit, Katie does carry herself in a more refined matter. Sorry Posh.

All that aside, Mr. Blackwell’s list is considerable, but I think it’s more of a “who’s more annoying” list than a worst-dressed list. Because as much as I love Posh, I can get on “mayjah” Beckham overload at times.

Best DRESSED of the week: Aug. 10, 2007

Like clockwork, I present to you the going-ons of fashion, pop culture and all that other juicy stuff that makes us all have a sense of humor:

  • Gucci and Chanel are launching a full-on code red attack on a threatening teen 15-year-old boy from Gothenburg for getting a package of counterfeit sunglasses with their label on it. He “claims” he didn’t know where they came from. This is what you get for pulling a fast one on luxury brands - naughty! naughty!
  • Oh god - speaking of naughty - Lindsay is at it again! She discreetly stuffed Louis Vuitton items in her bag while at an Elle photoshoot…but I think this is before all her rehab, drunk driving and all that other mumbo jumbo. She deserves a real big spanking! BAD GIRL!
  • The latest issue of W Magazine has someone on the cover that CLAIMS to be Gwyneth Paltrow. This picture will have me sleeping with the lights on for a while.

  • GOOD GRIEF! A bunch of designers at this year’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week are paying a homage to Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang! How fun! Heatherette, Isaac Mizrahi, Betsey Johnson, Pamella Roland, and Project Runway alum Laura Bennett will work with MetLife to present collection and auction that benefits non-profit organization, Dress for Success.
  • MTV announced their nominees for their annual music video awards. Are they actually trying to act like they still play music videos?
  • Mena Suvari sports her new hairstyle (or lack thereof) for a new movie. No, it’s not the remake of the 80s cult classic, Legend of Billie Jean, it’s for Hemingway-based The Garden of Eden.
  • Mena’s new do:

    Billie “FAIR IS FAIR!” Jean:

  • You may have been asking yourself, “Is Mr. Big going to be in this Sex and the City movie?” And the answer to that is…ABSO-F*CKING-LUTELY. Chris Noth with play Sarah Jessica Parker’s on-and-off soul mate in the movie.
  • According to Rolling Stone magazine, Zac Efron is America’s new teen heartthrob. On the latest issue of the mag, Zac serves as eye candy for every teen girl and sexually confused boy in the world.

  • Little Maddox is all grown up. It seems like the tyke is following in the footsteps of parental units Brad and Angelina as he graces the cover of Life & Style for his military-themed 6th b-day party.

  • Prince Harry also got a cover of a magazine…sort of. The latest issue of Radar, has caused a stir amongst the world because the picture was obviously tinkered with. Cause we all know that Prince Harry is more of a briefs kind of guy.

  • I am so happy that the Backstreet Boys (minus one) have a new single! Very hearstring-tugging, mushy and poppy! I LOVE IT! Listen to it here!

  • Michelle Pfeiffer is officially the QUEEN of summer cinema! With Hairspray going strong and her Stardust performance getting buckets of love, she is one hot commodity! She’s so hot that she FINALLY got a star on the Hollywood walk of fame! It’s about damn time! She should’ve got it for her performance of “Cool Rider” in Grease 2.

  • The fashionably flawless modern pin-up girl, Dita Von Teese has been chosen as the cover girl for Frederick’s of Hollywood suitably titled, “Pin-up Parade” lingerie line. I swear, there isn’t one moment where this lady does not look fabulous.

MTV Movie Awards and its red carpet blackout

I remember the days when I used to be excited about anything on MTV. I also remember when they actually played music videos.

That said, I was wondering if I should actually blog about the red carpet fashions at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards. More than that, I was wondering if there is anything worth blogging about. I mean, who cares about those girls on “The Hills?” I know I don’t, but I am sure there are some people who actually find them intriguing (i.e. a lot of my good friends).

I had a change of heart about covering the fashions on the red carpet after hearing Sarah Silverman’s monologue. After having a hearty laugh and dubbing her as one of my many heroes, it got me interested enough to see what people were wearing at this second-tier awards extravaganza. Plus, it’s been a while since I have done a red carpet review.

After flipping through some pictures, I discovered one thing: Black is the new black:

Sarah Silverman gave Paris Hilton a verbal beating of phallic insults in her opening monologue…and she did it in a nice black dress

Speaking of Paris Hilton, here she is in her black pre-celebratory slammer dress. Perfect way to mourn 23 days of freedom - or is it 22?

Jessica Biel showed up in this black frock that had some unneccessary detailing at the bottom

Here comes Amy Winehouse and her hair lookin’ beebop sleek in a quaint dark number. That’s nice and all, but girl - you need to get some meat on your bones.

Cameron Diaz sprouted up on the carpet with a strapless black dress that, from far away, looks like she just has a towel wrapped around her - and look at how short it is! See you next Tuesday Cammy!

Pop priness Rihanna took the stage in her China doll bob cut and this dominatrix-meets-ballerina costume. I’m scared and turned on all at once.

There also seemed to be an affinity for black and white prints:

Victoria Beckham pranced down the red carpet like a zebra in this thing. Along with her frosty top, she looked like a band member from Jem and the Holograms - but she still looked hot!

The summery “Mother Earth” dress that Eva Mendes was cute, but it was an awards show, not a day at the beach - and the handbag just totally threw things off for me. Maybe she had sudoku puzzles in there to keep her entertained throughout the show.

On the red carpet, Rihanna wore this delicate low-cut dress that was absolutely gorgeous - but the print bared some likeness to one of the Magic Eye Illusion puzzles.

To my delight, there were some splashes of color on the carpet. Most of them may have been in the same fuchsia vein, but they were a decent distraction from all the black:

“Transformers” diva Megan Fox rocked the carpet in this interestingly cut dress. It was shapeless and sexy with a strong detail of feminine pleating on the bottom. But I don’t kn0w about that tattoo…is it supposed to make us think? Or did she put this on her body to prove that she knows a lot of profound quotes? But one thing is certain- homegirl can work that carpet!

Jessica Alba (a.k.a the Invisible Woman from the “Fantastic Four” franchise) continued the trend of little or no straps and bubbling silhouettes in this red dress that says, “I’m the girl next door that will seduce you into buying a ridiculous amount of girl scout cookies.”

Pop-tween turned decent actress Mandy Moore strikes an awkward pose in this strapless delight that is simple with its silhouette, but intricate with its seam detailing.

Elizabeth Banks, known for her randy role in “40 Year-Old-Virgin,” wore this effortless purple strapless dress that had the elegance of the red carpet and a casual tinge appropriate for the event (I love the wrap belt). She looked like a sexy little grape on the red carpet - a grape that a lot guys probably wouldn’t mind eating up.

I’d like to give a shout out to AP Photographer Kevork Djansezian for takin’ these photos!

    Amy Winehouse and her hair

I love Amy Winehouse’s music. I love her overall “bad-girl-I-don’t-give-a-f*ck” attitude and her soul-driven character delivered through her voice. All of this translates to a very one-of-a-kind look that only Winehouse can pull off.

I love her waify figure and her Cleopatra eyes - as for her beehive ‘do, I am still kind of on the fence with it. Some days she rocks it, other days, I am just “eh” about it. What do you think?

    Sans Beehive?

Or do you prefer her with the toppling hairdo?

And is it me or are there some similarities between her and “OH….MY….GOD” Janice from Friends (mainly in the second picture above)?

    You tell me…
