“Movies Rock”: All Hail the Queen!

AP Photo/ Matt Sayles

With Conde Nast’s Fashion Rocks, they collide fashion and music. With the newly created Movies Rock, they fuse movies, music and, of course a little bit of fashion.

On Sunday the celebs lined up for this fancy event at the Kodak Theater in L.A. Some of them even performed tunes from classic movies! I think this is TOTALLY fun! I wish I would’ve gone…

Nonetheless, here is the always-fabulous Queen Latifah performing “Big Spender” from the movie Sweet Charity!

Don’t worry if you didn’t make it to the Kodak Theater on Sunday, Movies Rock will air Friday on CBS.

A “Dreamy” Oscars….(the final post, I promise)

Ok, I admit it - I left my computer for an hour and put a pause on my live blogging to have a birthday dinner with the family. I see that as a valid excuse.

Again, I THANK THE FASHION GODS for fellow fashionista from our sister paper, the Contra Costa Times, Jessica Yadegaran for being on top of things! She also gave her two cents on some of tonight’s looks.

…back to what I missed. I nearly jumped up and down with glee as I found out that Jennifer Hudson won for best supporting actress in Dreamgirls. I got chills - yes that’s so cliche - but I really did get chills. Hudson is, without a doubt, an American Idol - and she didn’t have to have a million of call-in votes to do so. And on a side note - doesn’t the dress look WAY better without that cropped jacket made of aluminum foil?

Jessica: Jennifer Hudson! Dang, girl’s got it going on! She’s glowing and lost weight from intense workouts, two a day, she says, starting with a 4 a.m. run. Even Simon Cowell is rooting for her, via video message. It’s perhaps the most heartfelt thing he’s ever said: “Jennifer, we are rooting for you and I have a feeling you’re going to win tonight.” n Big no-no: Hudson’s wearing a metallic caplet that looks harkens to a sci-fi film. Or a space age era in the future.

I see we are in agreeance. Let’s put that thing in the recycling bin. Al Gore and his environmentally-friendly Ralph Lauren suit will enjoy that.

EXTRA! EXTRA! EXTRA! THIS JUST IN! HELEN MIRREN WINS FOR “THE QUEEN”

Me: She looked so humble and dignified on the red carpet - even if she did steal a union jack from a random sap in the pit of paparazzi and fans. Her gown was fabulous - age-appropriate, fair-colored, ethereal and it had exquisite detailing. The neckline wasn’t revealing and it wasn’t prude either. Although this may not be appropriate - I thought she was, well, kind of sexy. All hail the queen!

Jessica: Easily one of the sexiest women in Hollywood. Her wavy bob, nude-colored gowns — this time, Christian Lacroix — and that decolletage. Flawless.

I like that word, “Decolletage.”

Ok…let me go back to Dreamgirls. That performance was mind-blowing - and I LOVED how all of them wore red - and they weren’t designed by Beyonce’s mother (thank God). The music nearly bought tears to my eyes. I love all three of these women - and yes, as much schmack I talk about Beyonce - my conformist side says to love her too. She’s bootylicious like the rest of them.

We also got to see those $500,000 Stuart Weitzman diamond studded shoes (click here to remind yourself about those) in action on Anika Noni Rose’s red carpet stroll.

Hmmm…is there anyone I forgot? Actually there’s a lot of people I forgot. There’s too much fashion to count here. It’s oversaturated and I love it, Let’s finish this off with a couple of some other snap shots of celebs - can we can never get enough of that:

Jessica: Jennifer Lopez, who looks less harsh than she usually does at these shindigs. Instead of slicked-back hair, she’s sporting a throwback bob and a lavender empire waist vintage dress with a broad diamond necklace. Hello, gorgeous.

Me: Very Goddessy. I’m not too fond of the necklace thing - is it a part of the gown? The empire waist is very flattering on her. I sometimes see the empire waist as a daring look for some women. In other words, some women should sport it, others should stay away from it. But yes, J. Lo looked marvelous in Marchesa.

Jessica: Here comes best supporting actor nominee Djimon Hounsou, in a black suit and red sunglasses: everyone remember him as the hot mystery dude in Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” and Janet Jackson’s “Love Will Never Do Without You” videos? I’d almost forgotten.

Me: Oh my - why did Seacrest have to bring up the “Straight Up” video? That video reminds me of the days of doing the running man while wearing my MC Hammer pants and Hypercolor T-shirt. Nonetheless, Djimon’s suit was dapper and it was a great tangent from the black and white, but the detailing made me think of a valet parking attendant.

I bow to the queen - no, I am not talking about Helen Mirren, although I do loved her Christian Lacroix gown, but I am talking about the ravishing Queen Latifah. The strapped black gown with horizontal textures would normally make someone look - please forgive me - wider, but the black sleekness made the Queen sexy, voluptuous and alluring- I think I
have another crush.

It looks like Kirsten Dunst spent too much time adding more feathers onto this dress rather than fixing her hair. She looks like she’s going for the “natural” look - and by natural I mean busted.

Jessica: Rinko Kikuchi, the best supporting actress nominee has a translator, but what doesn’t need translating is her hotness. Her blonde hair is as risqué as her role in Babel, and both put her on the map. Oscar or not, watch out, Hollywood.

Me: This is another fashion redemption from the Golden Globes. Rinko Kikuchi flattered her petite figure with this strapless black number. The dark tones were severely glamorous but the light old Hollywood femininity was defined by detailing.

And then there are all those outfits at the parties - but that’s another story. I guess another Oscar’s bites the dust. No fashions were extremely outlandish, but they were great to look at.

Overall, I am satisfied - with both the style and the results. And one more thing - I LOVE YOU JENNIFER HUDSON!

And now…back to the OSCARS red carpet!

So through the red carpet gauntlet, I saw a bunch of glam. I am about to go into a couture seizure. So please forgive me if these blog posts are like a running commentary by a scatter-brained little pre-schooler with ADHD.

Ok, so let’s get into the NOW. I am looking at Nicole Kidman. She is blending in with the red carpet with this crimson qipao-ish number and it’s lovely - except for that plushy bow on her neck.

The commentators say she looks gorgeous - I agree except for that pillowy thing.

Now, before they sign off, the gaggling bunch of TV personalities are talking about Reese Witherspoon’s gown - and I just have to say one thing: FABULOUS. The simple eggplant gown has a modern slant with the tiered flowing bottom. I said it once - and I’ll say it again - eat your heart out Ryan.

So let’s backtrack a little bit, let’s talk American Idol. No, I’m not talking about Ryan Seacrest flashing his Calvin Klein undies, I’m talking about Jennifer Hudson, nominated for Dreamgirls. She stomped down the red carpet in some jeweled Manolos and a pocketed chocolatey Oscar de la Renta gown. I love it all - except for that bolero. It’s throws things off and is very spacey in a Patti LaBelle way.

As much as I loved the Devil Wears Prada, two of the stars of the film disappointed me in terms of style choices. Anne Hathaway went overboard with the diamonds and a Valentino dress that looked like a huge black butterfly was embedded on her chest. Then, the nominated Meryl Streep wore jewelry that looked like it was purchased at a gift shop from the Grand Canyon.

…but Emily Blunt saved the day in this shimmery blue number.

Miss Blunt with Michael Buble

Let me get back to Ryan Seacrest - as much as he annoys me, I admire his style. I, like him, am a fan of the skinny tie - and he sported one much like the Oscar nominated, “rising from the ashes” actor, Jackie Earle Haley (nominated for Little Children). Kudos to both for being the only adventurous males donning the narrow accessory.

As for some of the other adventurously successful celebs - Kelly Preston was playfully elegant in a animal print Dolce & Gabbana gown - not necessarily my favorite, but she rocked it. Jada Pinkett Smith seemed encased in a constricted dulled yellow bodice and a glorious mermaid bottom - but it’s anything but dull.

Bringing some brightness to the evening was Kate Winslet. I loved, loved LOVED this simple, yet modern take on a strappy Grecian-like gown. It was like a morsel of minty goodness:

So, let me take a little break from the celebs. I switched channels from E! to the preshow on ABC - and can I just comment in how adorably refined reporter, Lisa Ling looked? She was also sporting the whole “short-in-front, long-in-back” look. The dress was fabulous, her hair was fabulous - the whole look was simply fabulous. She was like a contemporary Asian Audrey Hepburn.

So let’s see what rapid fire celebs appeared: Gwyneth Paltrow in Zac Posen, Celine Dion in a simple green dress, but gaudy-in-a-good-way jewelry…Beyonce moved it to the left in her Armani…and can you believe it’s the first time she’s in the shadow of someone else? Oops! Did I say that out loud?

…ok, another break.

A fashion writer at TCA?

You might say that a fashion writer at the Television Critics Association 2007 Winter Press Tour is unheard of! Actually, not really - because I am there! I joined up with our fabulous TV Critic, Susan Young (for the scoop on all of the shows talked about here and thensome, visit her blog by clicking here) to scope out the style scene of celebrities in television…

Too bad I couldn’t take my own pics. Miss Paquin looked absolutely fabulous! Photo Credit: REUTERS/Phil McCarten

I barged into Pasadena’s Ritz Carlton in the middle of the HBO sessions where they were talking about an upcoming series, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee starring Adam Beach, Anna Paquin and Aiden Quinn. First off, I’d like to say that Miss Paquin looks as alluring in person than on the big and/or small screen. She has this appeal to her that was just absolutely sultry - but not in a porno way. She was wearing a basic black dress and this heels that epitomized sexiness. Also, I noticed as she was walking away from the swarm of journalists after the session, she had a small tattoo on her ankle. I couldn’t make out what it said, but it definitely gave her more sexy points!

I then tried to snap some pics of some celebrities as they walked in, but unfortunately no one was in site. I also noticed the paparazzi in the roped off area…they looked kind of scary. Like trolls, except dressed worse.

After failing at my stalk-arazzi skills, I made a trip to the bathroom, which was bigger than my bedroom and plastered in exquisite marble. To my surprise, guess who was in there? Jamie Foxx. I wanted to approach him in the disarming environment of the restroom, but I really needed to go - plus that would be really awkward. So I let him be.

Later on, he, Queen Latifah and company held a press conference for their project, Life Support. I must say that Queen looked absolutely breathtaking. She donned a simple shirt dress and a gold-linked chained that flattered her to a tee. Plus, when she talked about the HBO movie, she was so smart and confident about the HIV subject matter. Brains and beauty - what a package.

I think the Queen may be my new hero - and of course, she has some sassy style! Photo credit: REUTERS/Phil McCarten

As for Foxx, I liked what he was wearing. A nicely textured olive green ensemble complete with a printed sweater vest of the nostalgic kind and a snazzy pair of ankle boots. Then, my newly-made TV friend, Gail Pennington from the St. Louis Dispatch pointed out he went a little overboard with the olive green, calling it “The Olive Green Symphony.” I agreed a little - but it’s Jaimee Foxx - he can make anything look cool.

I liked Foxx’s suede green boots (too bad they aren’t pictured) and his sweater vest, but maybe it was a little too “olive-chromatic.” Photo credit: REUTERS/Phil McCarten

At the final session, I had a chance to preview a new USA project called, The Starter Wife, based on the chick-lit novel by Gigi Levange Grazer. It stars Debra Messing, and unfortunately, she couldn’t be there. But thanks to the wonder of technology, she was there via satellite. I was happy to see her in all her glory…and her Christmas-inspired outfit. I liked her outfit: it was a white shirt, wide black belt, red skirt and knee high black boots. Sure, it may have looked like she was Mrs. Claus when she was sitting down, but I’m sure when she stood up, it looked fabulous. Unfortunately, she never stood up. Nonetheless, it’s nice to see that she still had the Christmas spirit.
