When Reese Witherspoon wore that little yellow dress on the Golden Globes red carpet last year, it must’ve sparked a trend.

Celebrities Christina Aguilera, Sharon Stone, Courtney Cox and Jessica Alba will all be making an appearance at the W Hotel in San Francisco on Oct. 19 - but it may not be exactly what you think. A-listers have donated and autographed their luxe purses for Breast Cancer Emergency Fund’s 3rd Annual This Old Bag: The Power of the Purse.
Presented by Kaiser Permanente, the event will feature over 200 designer and celebrity-donated handbags that will be up for auction. Fashionistas and celebrity fanatics will have the opportunity to walk out the door with a bag that someone like Vanessa Williams used.
In addition to the aforementioned names, the list of bags reads like a red carpet roster: Brooke Shields, Naomi Campbell, Minnie Driver, Christina Applegate and the list goes on.
In the past, the event carried baggage from those domestic divas on “Desperate Housewives,” a handbag from comedian Kathy Griffin and even a purse from the queen herself, Oprah Winfrey. Last year’s event raised $105,000 and with the looks of the purse roster this year, they may be on their way of surpassing that amount.
All the proceeds from the reception and auction will fund BCEF’s program of providing emergency financial assistance to women with breast cancer who are too sick to work.
“Of all the fundraisers I have been involved with, this is the most timely and most important. BCEF helps women in crisis,” said event co-chair Bella ‘Queen of Nob Hill’ Farrow. “Who doesn’t need one more handbag, especially if it helps a good cause?”
The event combines fashion and philanthropy in the funnest way, but if the purse included the amount of money each celebrity made in a year - that is a whole different ball game.
I think that their next project should be “Celebrity Wallets and Murses” for all of us fashion-hungry guys. I would be all over that. Imagine what Brad Pitt’s wallet would look like - or better yet, what about Pete Dougherty? I shudder to think.
The event is from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the W Hotel, 181 3rd St., San Francisco. Tickets are $125 and are available at www.ThisOldBag.org or by calling 415-558-6999 ext 8.

Sandra Oh looks stunning in Bottega Veneta

WATCH OUT
Ellen Pompeo! There’s a giant hairy monster attacking your head! Oh wait…that’s just your unnecessarily voluminous hairdo.

Becki Newton looks like a big, tall, sexy glass of…scalloped potatoes. Actually, she looks like an uncooked shrimp…or a seahorse…or some sort of scaly aquatic shellfish - and I mean that in the nicest way.

Anna Paquin is growing up to be a fine, classy and HOT lady!

Jenna Fischer looks like she was attacked by the drapery section of Target…okay, it doesn’t look THAT bad. I think it’s an acquired taste. But as of now, I’m tasting nothing but overwhelming disaster.

I would normally gag at the sight of so many feathers, but Vanessa Williams makes this Kevan Hall creation surprisingly appealing.

When I say “ugly,” I, of course mean “stylish” because I am describing the show Ugly Betty, the most fashionable show on ABC! AND! I would like to give my congrats to the show and to America Ferrera for snagging wins at the Golden Globes!
But back to my time at TCA in Pasadena. I was chatting with Silvio Horta, executive producer of the show (pictured on the right). He donned a weather-appropriate contemporary textured blazer and paired it with some basic black slacks. Also, his hair was spiky and bared resemblence to the show’s endearing womanizer, Daniel Meade. Of course, Horta told me he was a fashion maven, but I had to ask him about the Gucci purse episode (read more on that episode by clicking here). It wasn’t necessarily the first purse he had in mind.
“I thought the bag was too loud for the episode,” laughs Horta, “but I only had three days until they started shooting, so I didn’t have time to find another bag. I just made it work!”
I wasn’t the biggest fan of the purse either, but it matched the personality of the show - and Horta agreed.
America Ferrera saw eye-to-eye with me when it came to the Gucci purse. She liked it, but it wasn’t necessarily her style - and her own style was so savvy at that evening’s ABC soiree. Ferrera was wearing this magnificent Stella McCartney trench coat with slightly oversized banded collar - which I thought was her dress to begin with. She also did justice to a fabulously flattering BCBG dress:

Eric Mabius also impressed me with his newfound appreciation for the fashion industry becuase of the show and with his sleek blue Ozwald Boateng suit. He told me: “They send over suits to us all the time at the show.”
I was so jealous.

Mr. Mabius with his wife Ivy. I so wanted to steal his Boateng suit.
But the most daring look from the Ugly Betty cast that evening was that of Vanessa Williams:

I noticed how diva-esque she was: unruly hair, short shimmery skirt, bold clutch, sexy shoes - although it may seem this is “too wild,” she made it work - and thensome!
Michael Urie was there and Susan said he was wearing a Disney couture belt buckle - I didn’t get a chance to ask him about it because he was busy droppin’ it like it’s hot on the dance floor with castmate Ana Ortiz. Also, I caught glimpse of Tony Plana, Kevin Sussman and Mark Indelicato. I think they may have been the only ABC show where the majority of the cast showed up. I was as giddy as a schoolgirl in knee-high socks and Christian Louboutin Mary Janes.
