I saw DAVID BOWIE at Target!
The new BOWIE by Keanan Duffty collection hitting Target stores on Oct. 14 and I just think it will add more cool points to Target’s shopping score card.
“David Bowie has always brought ‘left field’ ideas to mainstream pop culture and has defined his own unique aesthetic and personality,” Duffty said. “Target strives to bring creativity and individuality to its guests, making this collection a perfect fit.”
That said, I decided to take the David Bowie inspiration Duffty used in many of his garments and do a side-by-side comparison to see if it translated well:

This outfit invokes Bowie’s cabaret-ish “Thin White Duke” persona in 1976 off of his Station to Station album. This is a vested literal translation of his slender silhouette, but it is still modern and it doesn’t look like something a David Bowie impersonator would wear. It’s what’s happening in fashion now. It’s sleek. It’s dandy. It’s totally chic.

The black trench was inspired by Bowie’s role Thomas Jerome Newton in The Man Who Fell to Earth. I have never seen the movie before, but according to an informant, the movie was, “kind of boring.” The movie may not be appealing, but from this comparison, the jacket is a great modern replica of a sleek trench.

I am not the biggest t-shirt and blazer fan, but if it’s Bowie, I might reconsider (heavy emphasis on the word, might). The cover of Bowie’s Aladdin Sane album has become iconic (Sarah Jessica Parker wore a t-shirt with this mug on an episode of “Sex and the City”). Duffy decided to make this a little more muted by simply placing a lightning bolt on a tee. Match it with the Bowie-esque fitted tuxedo slacks and coat and you’ve got yourself a nice look. It’s simple, but it still speaks “Bowie.”
To be honest, I am really impressed with this Target collection. I didn’t think it would be much, but Duffty proved me wrong.
If you like any of these looks, you can snag them at Target for a reasonable price (the cost of the collection ranges from$14.99 to $59.99) starting on Oct. 14. But you better hurry once they come out - they’ll only be in stores until Dec. 24. That’s perfect for a very “Bowie” Christmas.
Don’t you just love cheap-chic garb?
