Jennifer: There's really not much you can do if that turkey wants to be there. She can fly and run and if you chase her away she can fly/run right back after you leave. And I don't think you're going to get them to remove the mirrored columns. The turkey will eventually move on. She may also not have a flock, or she could have been chased away from her normal flock by other turkeys that didn't want to have her around. It happens. She'll see some other turkeys walking by and join them, or just wander off. Thanks for caring. /Gary

Gary-
Do you have any suggestions on how to get a turkey to cross the road? One seems to have wandered across the street from Diablo Creek Golf Course. This bird sees her reflection in the mirrored columns in front of the building and thinks it has a friend. I really think she needs to get back to her flock so she can have a meaningful relationship. She has been loitering around the building for about 6 weeks. What do you suggest?

Hi Gary,
I have a question about one of the comments regarding the 2 bills in committee that could possibly stop horse slaughter. I don't know much about them but do you think they would really stop horse slaughter in the US or will live horses just be shipped over the border to be slaughtered?

Hi Gary,
You brought the horse slaughter issue to my attention about a year ago in a round about fashion when you mentioned wild mustangs were being rounded up and taken off public lands. That in turn lead me to the fact that over 10,000 horses are slaughtered each year and sent over seas where they are consumed by people. I find this hard to believe as Americans we have outlawed the consumption of horse meat, but because the slaughter houses are owned by foreign-owned companies our government allows our horses to be slaughtered and exported.

Last year an amendment was passed by the House (249 to 159) and by the Senate (68 to 29) that was considrered to stop horse slaughter because all meat must be inspected by the USDA in order for it to be sent out of the country.

The Amendment would have stopped the horse sluaghter. But the Belgian companies will be allowed to pick up the tab and allow the foreign companies to pay for the inspection with private funds.

On January 17, 2006, 40 a group of Senators and representatives sent a letter to SEcretary of Agriclutre, Mike Johanns, accusing the USDA of "direct defiance of Congressional intent."

Right now there are 2 bills waiting in committee to be voted on, they are H.R. 503 and S1915. Either of those bills will permantly ban horse slaughter, stop the exportation of the meat and will stop the exportation of the horses or their meat for human consumption.

I would appreciate it if you could bring this issue to light. Thanks
