I know this is an old post, but my basset was attacked by a pit bull tonight. And I know it's not about the breed but about how they're raised... but I just don't know. I'm sure there are some lhaso apso's out there that are treated horribly but you never hear of a vicious lhapso apso attack.

Pit bulls are like loaded guns. Only people who know how to handle one safely should be allowed to own one.

My friend was severely mauled by a pit that was loose in a front yard. My friend was jogging down the street, but when she saw the uncontained dog she started walking slowly so as not to entice it into chasing. It attacked her in the street anyway, and she now has severe scaring on her torso and arm. The owner came out of the house during the attack, stood there, then went back inside without doing or saying anything. Luckily a passerby was able to beat the dog off. The dog was later destroyed.

I just heard recently on the news that a two year old girl was killed by a pit bull in England. It belonged to her uncle, and the man had already received complaints filed against the dog for vicious behavior. I guess it takes a tragedy for reality to sink in.

It seems to me that many pit bull owners are irresponsible when it comes to understanding and handling this breed. They get them for the tough image that they represent. Many pit bull owners around my city are very young, and when it gets to be a hassle to own the dog, they just abandon it somewhere. Or encourage it's behavior because it's cool that have a snarling, raging pit bull wearing a chain collar secured with a padlock, lunging at the fence as the neighbor walks by.

I am sure I have enraged all the responsible pit bull owners out there, but I am not talking about responsible pit bull owners. You at least recognize your breed's tendencies and probably take steps to maintain good behavior in your pet. The dangerous pit bulls seem to be the ones owned by irresponsible people who care nothing for the safety of others, just their image.

How many more people need to be killed or mauled before there is a law passed in owning pit bulls ?

What was the purpose of Pattys' message other than insults and propoganda ?

If you want to play amateur pyschologist in between asking people "if they want fries with that" find something that you know a little about.

Wow Gary... you sure know how to play the passive aggressive game. Act like you love animals and just stick little snide jabs in there about dogs, especiallly pit bulls. I dont know what your problem with pit bull dogs includes, but you need to stop this propaganda. If you hate dogs then leave dogs out of your column, since you obviously have no clue what you're talking about.

If these two dogs were let out intentionally
like you are guessing (as opposed to got out of the yard and no one bothered to come looking for them, etc.), the owner will not likely care one bit about you, your dog or your situation. The same type of human who would let their dogs out on the streets if they no longer want them is not the type of human who would have enough compassion to be concerned with the damage he/she has caused. That is the unfortunate truth of the matter.

Gary,
You might suggest that Candi contact ARF. They are sometimes able to help with medical bills; they were a godsend for me years ago. All monies raised through their thrift shop go into a medical fund -a good place to take all those unwanted items we find during our "spring cleaning."
