Hello,
I read the article in The Daily Review about people not seeing many Mourning Doves.I live in San Leandro, and it looks like I have a family of 6 who have stayed all year. Not that I'm an expert, but last year they built a nest on my patio shed ( on top of a cat carrier of all things ), and had two sets of babies. They are well fed here along with the squirrels!
This past week they have started making the little cooing sound. One was sitting on the shed, hopefully wanting to make a new nest?

Dear Gary;
We live down the Dam! road from BB in Orinda. My partner started putting out seed in a big way 2 years ago. That's when the Scrub Jays flocked like they were being led by Hitchcock himself and our doves started cooing less and making themselves scarce. This year it's better as we switched to tiny seed but if I ever caught a Jay harming a Hummingbird or Dove I could get violent. How can we discourage Jays while helping the vegiterians thrive?

I live in Castro Valley, and my
birds "flew the coop" too. They
disappeared last summer for awhile
also...but it turned out we had
hawks nesting in our oak tree. The tree was trimmed within an inch of its life by the landlord
and I've noticed the hawks a
couple of blocks away. Still
no treeties here. I miss them!

I think all the birds are coming to my backyard on Brookside Lane in Concord. Currently I have two feeders and am going through 100 pounds of seed a week. Concord Feed has a great price on Bird seed if you by in bulk.
