More dog killing in China

Another wire story by Associated Press Writer Christopher Bodeen says a second Chinese city "plans a mass dog slaughter to control a rabies outbreak … days after a similar cull in which dogs were beaten to death prompted a torrent of criticism." (See my other entry on this subject below.)
Officials in the city of Jining said Thursday they’d kill all dogs within three miles of the area where rabies had been found, the official Xinhua News Agency said. The city has about 500,000 dogs. Sixteen people have died from rabies in Jining in the last eight months, according to the AP story.
PETA has called for a boycott of Chinese products.
"Rabies cases are on the rise in China, with more than 2,000 people dying from the disease each year," says Bodeen. "Only 3 percent of the country’s dogs are vaccinated against rabies."
All this dog killing is an inhumane and completely ineffective way to deal with their rabies problem. The country needs to organize a rabies prevention program and start vaccinating all the dogs in China like they do in other countries of the world. I’m sure the World Health Organization would be willing to help.
Knocking thousands of pet dogs in the head is not going to solve their rabies problem.

Might be a silly question, but is there anyone (who would care &/or help) that we can contact as a (hopefully) mass group?
There must be something……..

Hi all – in addition to the the boycott, the North Shore Animal League has started a online petition to China’s Ambassador here in the US. This has gathered almost 8,000 signatures since the weekend. Sign it and pass it on to everyone you know! The more voices he hears the better – there is no better way to communicate than making an ambassador outside China ashamed of his country and its actions against animals.
Here is a link to more information and the petitition:

Thanks, Jorin, that’s very helpful. Dawnwatch, an excellent animal advocacy media watch that looks at animal issues in the media, suggests that people write letters to the editor in their local newspapers. The Times would be a good place to start. Make sure your letters conform to the letter policy listed in a box somewhere on the Editorial page.

We have to stop this now! We must speak up for those that cannot speak. These dogs are innocent and to be honest I am seriously pissed off about this cruel act.

I THINK WE SHOULD ALL BOYCOTT AMERICA. Yanks treated Japanese people like dogs at the end of world war 2 when they dropped 2 bombs on in killing people within a radius os 7m miles x 2. to hear you americen muppits talking about china’s treatment of dogs is amusing. check your own backyard and if you lived in Chian wouldn’t you be relieved that they are doing their best to irradicate rabies, despite their primitive methods. Ask someone with rabbies what they would prefer
