I have SEEN caracaras kill newborn calves by eating their eyes. I have seen red-tailed hawks carrying 5-7 foot snakes. I have seen large owls roost with chickens and sneak a grown hen every January. These raptors are very powerful birds, and I would not doubt that they could eat a portion, and a buddy carries off the rest of a baby sheep or goat.

Gary, I saw an eagle flying with a deer fawn in it's talons in the hills just above the junction of Marsh Creek Rd. & Morgan Territory Rd. back in 1975. I was amazed that that bird could pick up something that big, but I just figured it was mother nature at her finest! I think that your quote "I think we can forget the “eagles carrying off sheep” story" may need to be revised. When you say you had a golden eagle, I can only assume that the eagle I saw in the wild would have stronger flight muscles & a bigger need to feed than a bird that is kept in captivity & well fed!
