THE FOG CITY DUMPSTER IS CLOSED TODAY

Phil Frank, 64, a very special Bay Area cartoonist and creator of his Farley comic strip in the S.F. Chronicle, died Wednesday night after a long illness.

Phil will be missed by:

all the bears at the Fog City Dumpster,

Orwell T. Catt and too many other feral cats to list them all here,

Bruce D. Raven,

all the animals that lived in Asphalt State Park,

and especially a reporter and former ranger named Farley,

along with many, many others, including me and Lois and our cats, Tut and Newman. /Gary

I’m crying as I sit here thinking of the wonderful cartoons that he’s done and the people and animals he brought to life for us. What will happen to the old people in Elderberries? Will Ludmilla find love? Will the bears migrate back up into the foothills?

Because of Phil Frank I could always get a taste of San Francisco even as I sat here in my farmhouse on 37 acres in Idaho. Oh damn, we’re going to miss him!
