Losing your house? Don’t lose your pets!

By Gary Bogue
Monday, December 31st, 2007 at 6:52 am in Animal welfare, ARF.

On Dec. 22, Times staff writer John Simerman wrote a story about pets becoming a casualty of the foreclosure epidemic. People who have to move out sometimes don’t or can’t take their animals with them.

Real estate agents who specialize in foreclosed properties now sometimes find themselves also rescuing pets that have been left behind.

Tony La Russa, co-founder of Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), shocked after reading the above story, immediately made the following two Public Service Announcements (PSA) and sent them out to Bay Area radio and TV stations. If you know pet owners in the process of losing their home who could use a little help from their friends with their pets … please have them contact ARF for some assistance. Thanks.

30-SECOND PSA BY TONY LA RUSSA
Recently California had more than 39,000 foreclosure filings.
Increasingly, pet owners who lose their homes are abandoning their pets, often with tragic results.

Household foreclosures are at epidemic levels. Too often homeowners with a pet family member are facing the loss of their homes and pets.
Please don’t abandon your pets. If you need help or to be a part of the solution, contact ARF at 925-256-1ARF (925-256-1273) or http://www.arf.net

Thanks for caring. /gary

I still get goosebumps when I remember Tony coming to the rescue of the terrified kitty in 1990, during the A’s vs Yankees game. That incident resulted in ARF being born! What a guy!! On a personal level, ARF helped me with a sick cat years ago, and I’ll never forget them for that either. The world is definitely a better place because of Tony LaRussa….especially the animal world. Thank you for all you do Tony; it is truly appreciated!!

I wish Tony La Russa help us save thousands of feral cats being slaughtered just 40 miles north from where his project began in Oakland. I have rescued feral cats and kittens for more than ten years and I began my project because of a little tabby that crossed my path and taught me so much about the lives of feral cats.

I spent thousands of $ in vet bills, newspaper ads, food or whatever needed to insure my cats and kittens went to good homes. It was very hard work and during these years, I gave up my social life and so much more for these cats. I recently was made aware of a city ordinance passed in 2004 that mandates the killing of feral cats in my city, Petaluma, California. The ordinance also punishes caretakers. We are trying to change this ordinance and we need help. As a cat lover I am asking you to please help us spread the information and ask everyone to please, go sign our petition, write letters to our city council. All the information is at the site following this message. For all feral cats of America, I am asking for five minutes of your time today. Thank you so very much.

I wonder if there is any way they can be helped out by senior citizens in retirement homes?…or the prisoners ..like they do with training dogs for adoption..
