Another VERY important animal welfare effort happening now is the Californians for Humane Farming initiative! Volunteers all over CA are working hard to collect the required 650K signatures of registered voters, by mid-February 2008, to get a measure on the November 2008 ballot that will ask us if we want factory farmed animals (specifically chickens, calves, and pigs) to AT MINIMUM have enough room to stand up, turn around, and stretch their limbs. It's doesn't go far enough, but it seems animal welfare must move forward in the smallest baby steps in order to succeed...We are far behind where we need to be in terms of numbers of signatures collected. You cannot sign on-line - you must be a registered CA voter and sign a paper petition. Please visit
http://www.humanecalifornia.org/ if you want to help collect signatures. Also, my editorial on the importance and need for this effort was published in the Marin Independent Journal and you can read it here:
