2008 California Animal Legislation — What’s up in Sacramento

Animal bills for 2008 as of June 13.

Many of the following bills have not yet been assigned to committee or set for hearing. More bills may be discovered. We’ll let you know if and when they are.

West Nile virus: Report dead birds, squirrels to this number

A dead hermit thrush has tested positive for West Nile virus, the first case documented in Contra Costa County this year.

The first mosquitoes to test positive for the West Nile virus this year were also recently trapped in the Delta.

YOU can help fight this nasty virus by reporting all dead birds and dead squirrels to the same Dead Bird Hotline, 877-968-2473.

Are foxes raising cubs in your backyard? Check these photos!

Seems like every spring I get more and more reports that red foxes and gray foxes are making their dens under our back decks, or digging them under our garden sheds and raising their kits in our backyards.

Is that true? Do you have “company” in your backyard?

I think it’s time for one of my impromptu little surveys to find out that’s going on.

Got fence lizards (“blue bellies”) living in your yard?

The Western fence lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis), often called a “blue belly” because of the blue markings on the bellies of the males, photographed here by my good friend Brian Murphy of Walnut Creek, is a very common California lizard.

While working in my Benicia, Calif., garden the other day, I spotted five blue bellies patrolling my backyard garden boxes. That many lizards can gobble up more bugs every day than a whole can of nasty pesticide spray.

Congratulations Martinez! It’s a beaver!

Heidi just e-mailed me these photos of a NEW baby beaver taken as it fed on top of
the beaver lodge in Alhambra Creek in downtown Martinez!

The photos were taken by Moses Silva (thanks Moses!) Heidi says there are at least TWO new youngsters at the site and they are less than a foot long. Cute doesn’t touch it!

S.F. Zoo still at fault, even if teen drank, smoked pot, taunted tiger

The penalty for drinking booze, smoking pot, taunting (or having a criminal record) is not death.

I hate to revisit this terrible scene, but the City of San Francisco, and the public relations firm hired by the zoo to paint the kids as bad guys (yes, I know it wasn’t very hard), and now the San Francisco Medical Examiner … keep pointing fingers in all the wrong directions.
