Thank you for rescuing the little budgie! (parakeet is a generic term used by pet stores). Budgerigars are native to Australia. It’s important that the budgie eat more than just seed. Please visit http://www.mickaboo.org where you can learn a lot about how to care for your bird. We also offer FREE bird care classes around the Bay Area. Also, budgies do much better if they have at least one other budgie friend, so consider adopting another one from Mickaboo or your local shelter and then get the biggest cage you can afford with no more than 1/2″ bar spacing.

Gary, There was a parakeet in my backyard (at the base of the feeder) a few months ago. My son brought her in, and when we couldn’t find the owner, our family increased by one. Was this the right thing to do? I just assumed that they couldn’t live outdoors…..had to be kept out of drafts etc. I’ve already been stressing about my cold house in the winter…..I suppose I don’t need to worry after all! (She’s staying in though!

A couple of years ago I saw a parakeet similar to this one with a flock of finches in the parking lot at Cosco in Concord. It was quite a site to see.
