I worked in Madagascar from 1992 to 1994. I loved the rain forest sights and sounds. The leeches were annoying but it is their home after all. What a gorgeous place. I was fortunate to see almost all the species of lemurs and tried to teach locals the benefits of the giant chameleons whom they feared. The problem of cooking fuel is the big problem of all rain forests but Madagascar is working on solutions. A friend who is a botanist is busy cateloging as many new species as she can find. The birds are to die for also.

The taxicabs may or may not be scary (I’ve never been to Panama, so I don’t know if they’re in the same league as those in the Truly Scary Cities.) I figure the army ants wouldn’t bother me if I stayed out of their way, and the alligators wouldn’t bother me if I didn’t go out of my way to look like prey to them.

But the tales that really scare me about jungles are those of insects that cluster around the mosquito netting at night, waiting for the unwary sleeper to roll over against the netting and within range of their bites. Or worse, the tales of bugs that lay eggs under the skin, so that one wakes up with living (and eating) wrigglies under one’s skin. AAAAGGGGHHHH!!!!

I don’t think I’m a good candidate to visit rainforests.
