Dear Sherri,
I`m a producer of Christmas tree netting. That netting is made with High density polyethilene granulat.
I do it with hdpe DOW Chemicals. It is a specialy produced for the monofilaments. It isn`t biodegradable, bit it is highly recyclable. I sell more then 150 tons only to Scandinavia. Trust me, they would never accept something non-recyclable.
However, everyone who get the tree in that kinde of net, hi should throw it into apposite recyclable bin for PLASTIC and we would never run any risc for anybody and anything to get stuck into it.
Regards

The Kirk Company sells a 100% biodegradable netting, which can also be recycled in most municipal programs. Maybe, you could inform Costco of this company.

Hi,

Maggie just sent me your blog and the concern about tree netting. I had just sent out an-mail to my list as I was facing the same problem. I ended up zipping it in a plastic bag and hoping it will never escape. I had considered burning it but figured that might not be a great idea. I applaud the woman who is taking the time to cut up her netting. I have decided the best weapon is to ask them to not net your tree. It is harder to transport but a lot easier than cutting up the entire net or feeling guilty about killing innocent creatures. We could also start yet another movement to stop places like Home Depot from using the netting. Glad I am not the only one concerned about this. I am going to write a letter to the papers about this.

Thanks and Merry Christmas,
Sharon Salisbury
