Local animal rescue groups need YOUR help NOW!

By Gary Bogue

Bay Area nonprofit animal welfare organizations and city and county animal shelters need a little help from their friends. Because of the recent severe downturn in the U.S. economy, these valuable organizations are not getting the donations they need to survive … at the same time we need them most.

Find out more on the reasons behind all this by reading my daily newspaper column for today, Dec. 23, at:

  1. Friends of the Fairmont Animal Shelter (FOFAS) Says:

Please add our group to your list of non-profit animal welfare organizations. We are the rescue group affiliated with Alameda County Animal Control, 2700 Fairmont Dr., San Leandro, CA 94578. We feed cats and dogs at the San Leandro shelter, walk dogs, and rescue dogs and cats who become ill at the shelter or are to be euthanized when they have outlasted their time there. We also have animal adoption days at local pet stores and foster kittens and puppies too young to be in the shelter. Thank you. Our incoming president is Tammy Larsen.

  2. Barbara Finn Says:

How can we find out what percent of our donation goes to help the animals and what percent goes to administration? Also, knowing the number of animals they have rescued would be helpful. Is there a site where we can see their financial statements?

  3. Michaela Daystar Says:

    Hi Gary!

Thanks so much for publishing this list! Just the other day I was wondering if the animal shelters could use some volunteering and donations this time of year, and had thought of writing you to ask. Should have known you’d have it covered!

Have a fantastic Christmas! Thanks for all you do!

Hi, Gary! Thank you so much for posting this list of groups who need h elp! May I suggest my own rescue, Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue? We’re Bay Area based and have experienced a huge surge in birds needing placement – we have 177 companion birds needing homes right now!

  8. Mary Long Says:

I hope you don’t forget our very own, local, bird-rescue: Mickaboo & Mickacoo. It is run entirely by volunteers and funding from private contributions. Contributions are for veterinary care. Foster-parronts pay for food and enrichments.!

  9. Robert Says:

You may want to add the Companion Bird Rescue organisation They are the primary (only?) bird rescue organisation in the greater Bay Area and I know various of the local humane societys and animal controls rely on Mickaboo to foster and care for birds found ill, or abandoned. I just adopted from them and they do a very thorough check out of potential adoptors.

Thanks so much for your wonderful column on Dec. 23rd, as well as this growing list of animal rescue groups. Although I am on the board of Contra Costa Humane Society (CCHS)and hope we receive donations as a result of your efforts, I will be thrilled for any of the rescue groups that receive additional help. Together we CAN make a positive difference in the lives of animals as well as help the people who love and care for them!

Happy and safe holidays to all!

  13. Mary Christensson Says:

    Good Morning Gary!

Merry Christmas season to you and your family, and, as always, thank you for your cogent comments on helping animal rescue organizations. Perhaps one thing you may be able to work into your column is a gentle suggestion that people think about redirecting some of the money they might spend on elaborate clothing and toys for their pets to help homeless animals and injured/displaced wildlife.

    With best regards,

    Mary Christensson

Please add Muttville to your list of animal rescue organizations. They specialize in adopting out geriatric dogs. The Houston Chronicle carried an article about them in the Bay Area section of the November 29 paper. Their website is

  16. Rochelle Kelly Vail Says:

    Hi Gary,

I’m a recently self-published author of a childrens book dedicated to lovers of animals, such as your column’s fans. As a long-time animal advocate and volunteer for a local animal organization (HARP), I self-published Critters, A Dog’s Tale – funding it out of pocket – after failed attempts going the more orthodox route with an agent/publisher, because I knew there was another story we had yet to hear. This one is told from the perspective of an insecure, abandoned young dog who has been thrust from the only home he’s ever known to wind up inside a rehabilitative hospital with other broken animals, none of which remind him of the kin he left behind. HARP is one those rescue organizations which aims to educate our youth about their impact on animals’ experiences with humankind and how those experiences shape our children’s lives as well. I encourage you to visit my website ( and would be very honored to send you a copy for your personal library. I can also be reached at this email:
    Happy New Year.

  17. Annette LIsa Says:

    Hi Gary,
This is in regards to the animal rescue groups needing donations as they need it more than ever right now. I recently rescued 4 feral cats and 1 mama cat (pregnant for the 3rd time)and her 4 kittens from a house where the owners left them after being foreclosed on. Please tell your readers to help any abandoned or stray animal. Do not turn your head and ignore them. I knew I could offer them shelter, safety and food, but I am not financially able to spay/neuter, give vacinnations and any other medical needs that they might have since I am currently unemployed and going to school. I also have my own animals. Seven total. So, I called around and the Contra Costa County Humane Society is going to spay/neuter them. I plan on trying to collect some donations from friends and family for their other needs. I have a pregnant mama cat, a one year old cat, 3 tame kittens, 2 ferals that I have been working with and have come along way and 2 ferals that I just trapped on 1/2/09 that need some time to come around. Please let me know if anyone might be interested in adopting these great cats.

    Thank you,
    Annette Lisa
