Well, the sunflowers in our garden have ripened, the blossoms are all stuffed to the brim with fat, tasty sunflower seeds … and you know what that means, don’t you?

The fox squirrels are busy climbing our towering, 12-foot tall sunflowers to feast on those seeds!

I’ve already chopped down some of those monster sunflowers (“Timberrrrrrrrrr!). It’s not easy. The stalks are 6-8 inches in diameter and almost as hard as wood.

After I chop down a big sunflower, I cut off the now dried head full of sunflower seeds and hang it on my back fence. That way the squirrels can run along on top of the fence and feed on that tasty smorgasbord. Best part of this? The squirrels are so busy feasting on sunflower seeds, they leave the rest of the garden alone!

Sunflowers, especially the really tall ones, are a LOT of fun when you plant them here and there around your backyard garden. It’s like gardening in a forest.

Try it … you’ll like it! /Gary

    Gary,

I would like to know the name of the great sunflower seeds that you planted and also where can I can go to buy them. The ones I planted were approximately 10 feet tall, however, they only had a small stalk at about 3-4 inches.

I have two chickens and they just love the daily treats of sunflower seeds. I have also harvested my seeds. I had 10 plants with the majority having large pods of seeds. I would like to send a picture of them to you, but I don’t know how to do that on this blog page.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
    Jim Beckerich
