Thank you, Maddie’s Fund! The Adoptathon was such a wonderful idea, and obviously was a great success! I, too, hope that the participating organizations will do as much follow-up as possible with all adopters, to be sure that the adoptees are adjusting well to their new homes and lifestyles. As all pet-lovers know, bringing home a new “baby”, of any age or temperment, causes changes in routines for the humans and sometimes behavior problems for the animals that need to be monitored. A lot of love and sometimes even more patience usually takes care of the adjustments necessary, but no one wants to see any of these animals returned to a shelter.

I am so thrilled for the ladylike Bailey, a beautiful 10-year-old calm, dignified Dalmation, and Josh, a handsome laid-back shepherd mix. Both of them, and many other fine animals I had walked as a Canine Companion at the East Bay SPCA in Oakland, were adopted last weekend. Today (Tuesday, June 15) we actually had more volunteers than dogs, but there were big grins everywhere, because we all knew that many wonderful pets who had been confined for too long had at last gone home with loving families. The cats had a big run of adoptions, too. Every week, we get more great pets, and kitten season is just beginning. Remember, your local SPCA operates on donations from the public. I’m all for animal adoption(I have a pound dog adopted 6 years ago), but is someone following up on the fate of these animals to ensure they are in good homes and don’t end up back in a shelter?
