I have not seen a Ringneck snake in 30 years.  Got photos of a young one yesterday. I must be spending time in the wrong habitat to run across them.

Hornworms: Guess what’s been eating your tomato plants?

Tobacco hornworm. Photo by Joanne Ouimet, Concord, CA.

Ever wonder what’s been eating all your tomato plants? Look at the photo above (taken in Concord). It’s a tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta).

They LOVE tomato plant leaves. These caterpillars grow to about 3-4 inches, by the way. Huge. If you’re out in your garden early in the morning when it’s quiet, you can even hear one chewing on the tomato leaves: MUNCH! MUNCH! MUNCH! /Gary

I found a spunky hummer having lunch at my Salvia bush in my backyard. As I crept up, he spun around and stared me down for a second, then went back to his meal.

Sea lions sunbathing on the San Joaquin River

Sea lions on San Joaquin River, by Dale & Sue Jenlink, Discovery Bay, CA
sea lions

We saw these sea lions near the junction of the Mokelumne and San Joaquin rivers on Wednesday, Sept. 15. They were not bothered by our boat or camera.
Dale & Sue Jenlink, Discovery Bay, CA

Dale & Sue:
WOW! Fresh water sea lions!

Just kidding. Sea lions occasionally enter San Francisco Bay from the ocean and swim up the Sacramento River to the spot where you took these photos. They’re up there looking for salmon and striped bass to eat. Great photo, by the way! /Gary
