Here is a recommendation, you can drive across the isthmus by car, about 5 to 10 miles before you get to Colon(city on East side of the isthmus) there is a turn off toward a small berg named Puerto Bello, It has a great history and it is a quaint city. When I was there there was only one person who spoke English, a transplant from Baltimore named Wanda.
She gave us a tour of the city and showed us old cannon buried in the sand near the waters edge as well as remnants of an old fort. All the people in the village were black, remnants of slaves. They all spoke Spanish, no English. Puerto Bello's claim to fame is that it is one of the stops Columbus made on his third trip to the new world. It is also the place where one of Jocque Cousteau's sons was killed by a hammerhead shark. Just an idea, it's a short drive maybe 70 miles for a great adventure.
