I suppose they do occasionally “screech” but I have never heard that call. Rather I get to stand quietly in the cool, half-light of early morning and listen to this sweet call:

They are finally getting some respect as people are starting to pay attention. I think it is us to us to watch out for them. Discing and tilling is a huge issue in east county. People can call fish and game when their burrows are threatned. It seems to me they are a great resourse for our communities and it would really take little effort to help the little owls survive. They are adorable! We’ve taken our girls and my nephews out to look for the pellets, to see what they’ve been eating. We also find a lot of small rodent skulls and bones near the burrows.

Years ago, back before Mission College in Santa Clara expanded, I would walk there three mornings a week before work. There was always a burrowing owl, standing beside her hole watching me as I passed. I always said “good morning” to her. Now all that area is developed. I hope her (grand? great-grand?) children have found places to burrow and raise families.
