Praying mantis sitting on a rose, waiting for dinner. Photo by Jo Ann Sendldorfer, Fremont, CA

You want camouflage? Check out this praying mantis sitting on a rose … just waiting for a bee or some other insect to stop by for lunch. HIS lunch.
If these guys were a foot long or bigger, we humans wouldn’t be able to leave our houses safely unless we were wearing suits of armor. Fearsome! /Gary

Great photo, Jo Ann! That is one pregnant mama soon to nest. It was really neat to see the *many* young’uns hatching, and hanging on to each other in our trees, rose bushes in Maryland. Out here I’m lucky if I see an occasional mantis. I absolutely love them!

That’s a beautiful rose, does anyone know what kind it is?

Gary,
I spotted 2 wild pigs just behind the houses above Treeview and Fairway streets in Hayward just before Thanksgiving. This was a first. I often see wild turkeys and deer in the same area.
