The things you can learn by just looking at the birds in our creeks! I didn’t know what a hooded merganser was, and thought they looked like the common mergansers until I took a photo of a pretty bird in the creek.  I looked it up in a bird book and sure enough I had my first photo of a hooded merganser in Civic Park, in downtown Walnut Creek!

The pair of wood ducks is still hanging around Civic Park, in the vicinity of two wood duck nesting boxes and we’ll have to wait and see if the pick one.

It’s really amazing what’s paddling around in some of the creeks that are running right through the middle of downtown Walnut Creek! All you have to do is take the time to look! Nice photos! And great job putting up all those wood duck nesting boxes on trees alongside the city creeks. When the wood ducks start nesting along the creeks, it attracts other interesting aquatic birds … like hooded mergansers!  Hear that, bird watchers? Grab your binoculars! /Gary

Wow! That is a wonderful discovery. I’m up by the American River and the big bird watching buzz since January has been a hooded merganser. Rather rare. :) Good for you for capturing yours in Walnut Creek.
