We had two pairs visit us late winter in 2011, bathing in our 3-tiered fountain in the front yard. That was the first time we’ve seen Western bluebirds on our property (in Concord off Treat Blvd. near Lime Ridge) since we moved here in 1981! My husband built two bluebird nesting boxes, put them in our side yard, hoping they would be selected by these beautiful birds. One day the males started pecking on our front windows and the car’s mirrors. This lasted a few days while we attempted to cover the reflective surfaces, but the birds must have decided the “intruders” were victorious over their territory. They left just as suddenly as they appeared, and a pair of titmice chose one of the birdhouses to raise young. This year two pairs visited again in January for about three days, only to disappear as they did last year. Would love to know the secret of getting them to stay around!
